FOOTBALL GAME TODAY AUBURN WILL MEET THE MONT G0MERY ATHLETES. First Gridiron Contest of Season al Highland Oval--CIemson and Alabama to Play in Bir- minxham. Montgomerys football season will open this afternoon at the Highland Oval, when the Montgomery Athletic Club team will meet the Auburn Col lege team. While there is little or no doubt at- tached to the final outcome of the con- test. still the game issof great inter est to Montgomery lovers of the great non professional sport, who will be given an idea of the efficiency of this years team from the Polytechnic In- stitute. And then perhaps 1t will be the only contest between the knights IAof the gridiron that will be pulled of here this season and there are a num- Der of people In Montgomery who de- light in nothing more than to see a we’ll executed mass play or a sefsa- tional end run. The Auburn team will arrive in Montgomery on this mornings train The squad will number sixteen men and 1t Is expected that Captain Randolph Reynolds. in whose charge the team is. will try out every member of his squad. Auburn this year has team that will outweigh anything they have put out since 1900 and the. score of 44–0 that they rolled up against Florida Monday shows that they have developed con- siderable speed. For the first year in the history of Auburn football, the team has been coached by a Yale man. Donahue has doubtless instilled in the team, the conservative straight foot ball and logged determination that has always made Yale figure prominently on the field. ,p For the first time in the football his- tory of the Institute, the team will not made Auburn famous in the days of Heisman and unsuccessful under other coaches. Coach Donahue will not accompany the team to Montgomery. He thinks he can utilize his time to more advantage watching the form in which Clemson and Alabama are playing in their game in Birmingham. on the field. All of It’s men are old footballists from the University, Au- burn and other Southern colleges, and were the men in anything like condi- tion. Auburn would have to look to it’s laurels. A determined game may be expected from the veterans, however. and sensational plays are likely to be pulled off by the Paterson boys. both old Auburn stars, Jim Brown, the ever reliable heavyweight guard, and sev- eral other members of the team. Neither team has definitely decided on it’s lineup. The Southern game in which Mont gomery interest Is centered today is the contest between Clemson and Alabama at Birmingham. It will determine the 1904 form of two teams which football writers throughout the South have fig- ured as possibilities for the first di- Es Clemson should win. It is true that the team lost much when 1t lost the coaching of Heisman. Sitton and Sad Ter, Harvey and other last years stars have twink1ed out through graduation, but the foundation that Heisman builds after four years at an institution gen. orally lasts until all the members of his teams have graduated and Clemson will doubtless be heavy, fast and strong. On the other hand. reports from Ala bama have not been as favorable dur ing the past week as they were to- ward the beginning of the season. In the Florida game the Alabama boys played miserably and only through their superior weight were they able to win the contest. The team, which was the lightest in the South last year. will average 165 pounds this season, but re- ports are that the speed. which made last years team successful, is lacking this year. Blount has been working hard on his men this week. however, and they have been able to get some fine scrimmage practicing. It Is probable that their form will have greatly changed by the time for the referees whistle this afternoon.
