UTAH PLAYED WELL AGAINST DENVER. Strong Colorado Team Could Not Make Touchdown Won on Field Goals, ALL HALLOWS BEAT OGDEN. College Eleven Too Strong for Junction City High School Team--Won by Score Of IS to o. In one OF the greatest football struggles ever witnessed on Utah grIdron, the VARSITY team played the strong Denver university eleven to standstill on Cum mings field Saturday afternoon. The statement was made prior to the game that even II the visitors won they would realize they had been In one Of the hard est games Of their football career. II was no idle boast. The prediction was full filled to the letter Even though the Utah team lost the game II suffered no humllI. alton; there is nothing to regret. Nobly did the team stand by its colors and defend them. In defeat there was the sweet scent Of victory. Victory? Yes because the home team by its scientific work, the pluck, speed and endurance displayed, establshed for itself the honor OF being the best the University has ever produced, Past failures were eclpsed by It’s magniloent work, The boys demonstrated what they could do when great things were ex. pected OF them, They won and deserved the plaudits Of thousands They cast into oblivion the defeat they recently suffered at the hands OF the Logan team, AMI awakened that old time enthusiasm that knows no bounds They established tho right 10 contend on the field of athletic tnueuNor for the nOnor OF tne state Cndfn” pionship Those who saw their work Sat ufday, and who witnessed the Logan game, declare that had the Utah boys dis played the same vim, dash ana determine alton on that occasion as they did In saturdays game. the result would have been different, TO hold their opponents from making touchdown; to smash their way through the onemys line and place the ball within three yards of the coveted goal, is surely something TO be proud of. To do all this is certainly an achieve ment worthy to be called a victory The Denver boys played mastorful game. They deserve great deal Of praise for their grit and stcktoitiyeness. They came here fun Of courage and hope. They looked for an easy victory, but were SUR prised TO md themselves up against q hard combination When they rushed against their opponents line with all the force and determination at their com mand, they were met with equal vigor. Their cunning was met by cunning. They soon realized that to win they would have OF the game. They could afford to lose no chance no matter how slight. From the very start they were appalled, at the fierce onslaught Of the Utah boys. They looked NOT for such force and nerve and scarcely before they could nerve them selves for the vicious battle they knew was on, they were swept off their feet Utah pounded their line with all the energy at their command and did not stop until the oval was dangerously near the goal line. Then Denver made a desperate stand and as though battling for hon or and very life, they stcadied them selves for the final avalanche OF muscle and Drawn and held for downs. Now the Denver team had the ball and quickly they made the most OF II, Their opponents were somewhat weakened by their fierce playing and Denver rushed at them with the force OF battering ram. AS Utah had forced Denver back 80 Denver now began TO gain ground against Utah. Down the field they rushed the oval until II ncared the fatal line Then Utah braced like stone wall and mighty shout rent the air as they held the enemy for downs and again secured the ball. Thus II continued throughout the game. Up and down the field the long haired gridiron heroes fought first one side and then the other gaining slight advantage. Twice did Utah force the ball to within striking distance OF Denver’s line, Vic tory doomed up before them. IL did not seem possible that human strength and endurance could Withstand their reckless, daring, vicious plunges. On these occaslons both sides prepared for the supreme cnort. To one side IL meant victory, 10 the other defeat. Amid GREATNESS silence the signal was given, the ball snapped and the onslaught made. Then arose the 1900 spectators and with waving hats flags and hankerchiefs, they gave vent 10 cheer after cheer as they saw the visitors hold their ground. 1t seemed impossible for either side to score by line bucklng or end runs. Denver adopted other tactics Three times goal from the field was tried and twice the efforts were crowned with success. Utah also tried for goal from ield but each time failed, Thus did Denver win 10 points TO Utah’s nothing To pick out two or three players from each elayen as the bright particular stars would almost amount to an Injustice L. the others. They were all stars Every man played as though upon him depended the victory or defeat. They all combined 10 give the spectators a football treat q feast and most nobly did they succeed The game was voted the best Of the sea. son.
