SPORTING NEWS. Haskell Won from h. q. in Sat- urday’s Contest. Indians Did It in First Inning, Aided by Luck. KANSAS LOST NERVE. In Second Half Weeks Men Did Best Work. Played Rings Around the Noble Red Men. L. KANSAS LOST NERVE. Topeka Players Were a Factor Worthy of Mention. Lawrence. Kan, Oct 26.-Kansas university, under the splendid coaching OF that great Michigan player, Weeks, met its first defeat Saturday on Nc Cook field at the hands of the Haskell Indians by the score of IL to 6. Kansas has herself to blame for the loss of the game. She had the best material on the gridiron and on ability to play the game should easily have won from the redskins. In the first half X. u. made a miserabic effort at playing football The In dams were fortunate in making the first score within two minutes after the game started by a tumble which was followed up by booting the ball for more than fifty yards down the field when P. Hauser for Haskell finally Sc cured the pigslSin and carried the ball the remaining distance to a touchdown. This “fiuke” score gave the Indians great encouragement,w l1ile on the other hand it dampened the spirit of the K. u players to point from which they never recovered during the first half. On deceiving rush play, the Indians took advantage of the nervous Kansas team and scored their second and last score before the half closed. When the second half opened Kansas went into the game with spirit and dash which would easily have won the contest had they shown their true form in the opening of the game. During the fifty minutes of play on straight football K. U. carried the ball about 270 yards, while the Indians made about 200 yards In the second half Kansas made 1876 yards to HaskelPs IL. In this latter half of the game Kansas simply smothcred the braves, but it was too late. Rice, the Topeka player, did good work al left tackle, while Griggs and Fleishman, the other Topeka boys on K. U. helped wonderfully in the second half. Pooler, Hicks and Brummage played their usual good game. K u has the material and the coach, but are lacking in teamwork and speed. The game put up by Kansas in the first half was sick ening. The men got off slow, the interference was. poor and in their playing showed plainly that they were a lot OF scared, ratified. nervous players. No credit should be taken from Has kell The Indians took advantage of K US weakness, playing good, hard foot ball. They prayed a very rough game and should have been penalized for this kind OF work. = but in the excitement OF the contest their foul play was over looked. Archiquette. Roberts and Vince lock did Haskells brilliant work and practically won the game for them The f1erceness of the play resulted IN laying men out often, and the warmth or the weather also told on the men. Severaf players were forced to retire from both teams. The lineup was as follows: Haskell Positions. Kansas Felix. Left end ..... Drummer Freshman Wheelock. Left tackle 1900. Rice Lugo – Dugan. Left guard Donald Hunt Center $3.50. Michaelson Oliver. Right guard 49,. Yielding E. Hauser. Right tackle. .AcKer1naI p. Hauser.... Right end ......... Hicks Moore. -. Quarter back $500. .Pooler Wilson Archiquette.. Right half Cooke Guyon Full back ....Brummage (Captain) officials: Ellick of Haskell, referee; Tucker of K. u. unlpire: Haskeil man was timekeeper. Time of halves, 25 minutes.
