COLUMBIA PLAYED TO A STANDSTILL Williams Gives New York College Hard Battle. POLO GROUNDS. N. Y, Oct 1O.-On a field covered in places with nearly a foot Of water, Williams fought the CO. lumbia football team to a standstill this afternoon and held the Blue and White to single touchdown. The gridiron on which the game was played measured but 100 yards in length. and any punt into the lake encroaching on the side lines was considered out of bounds. In the first half Williams played all around Columbia, holding them easily and crashing through their line. Co lumbia began to play at the end of the first half and succeeded in gaining sixty yards on straight plunges just as time was called, with the ball on Williams 2O-yard line. The squirt lapsed over into the second half, and Columbia, after the kickoff. rushed the ball down near the goal. where Williams braced, only TO lose the ball again Smith scored the touchdown. Score, 5 to 0. No goal was tried, owing TO the short field.
