Navy, a team that still has a chance to match its 1861 record. and Syracuse, a team that can’t, meet in Syracuse tomorrow in a game that could be decided by the weather. A sellout crowd of 10000 is expected to witness the OPEN ing kickoff at 1870 in Archbold Stadium as Syracuse attempts to improve on it’s “a record and Navy seeks its fifth VIC tory in eight starts. Both teams were 7–3 last season. Despite Nays better record, which includes a 32–9 victory over Pittsburgh, the team that defeated Syracuse, 24–6 last week end, the Orangemen are rated slight favorites. The reason for this could be the six inches Of snow that covered the Syracuse area early in the week and the prediction Of rain for later on. Nays Of Tense relies on dry conditions, while Syracuse, with a heavier line which Wayne Hardin, the Navy coach, says will outweigh the Midshipmen between is and 20 pounds per man, seems better equipped to cope with slippery footing. Quarterbacks Square Off The game is being billed in Syracuse as a battle of sophomore quarterbacks – Nays Roger Staubach and Syracuse’s VALLEY Mahle. There is a striking similarity in their backgrounds. Staubach was called on after the Middies dropped two of their first three games and has led Navy to three victories against one defeat in its last four. Mahle took over after the Orangemen lost their first two without scoring a touchdown. Under his leadership Syracuse split even in its next four. Staubach appears to be the better passer and Mahle the better runner. Staubach has completed SO Of SO passes for 513 yards and four touchdowns, while Mahle has connected on 20 Of 80 attempts for 1911 yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, Mahle has accumulated TIA yards, second only to Fullback Bill Schoonover, while Staubach has picked up 127 yards, mostly on desperation sprints after being trapped in his backfield. Doubtful Starter Navy probably won’t have to contend with Schoonover, a 200-pound junior. who aver ages over five yards per carry He was injured against Pitts burgh, and Ben Schwartzwalder the Syracuse coach, says he Il a doubtful starter tomorrow. That moves Jim Nance, VIII, is even faster and bigger thai Schoonover but not as reliable into the fullback slot, will Mike Koski and Don King a the halfbacks. Both Nance anc Koski are sophomores, leavine King as the only experienced back. = Besides Staubach, only Pat Donnelly. the fullback, is a sophomore in Nays backfield Dick Earnest and Bob Orlosky are juniors. The Middies have made only one change from the team that started against Notre Dame last week. Steve Hoy reinjured the leg that has plagued him all season and his guard SPOT will
