Results of Other College Contests Games Played by High schools. special to the indianapolis Journal. Special to the indianapolis Journal. LAFAYETTE, Ind, Nov. 27.-Purdue and Notre Dame fought strenuously for State championship honors this afternoon. and instead of the predicted easy victory over the South Bend team, Purdue just managed TO tie the score in the last few minutes of play. II was a lucky thirty yard dash of G. Miller, substitute full back. that saved Purdue from a heart breaking defeat, and the TOUCHDOWN was so unexpected that the disconsolate rooters were transformed into a shrieking mass that, did not subside till the players left the field. The struggle was by far the hardest OF the year, the hardest, perhaps, ever fought on Stuart Field. Purdue did not show the splendid form exhibited in the Indiana contest. The interference was slow, fumbling was constant and costly, and the cold, muddy field made snappy play an impossibility. Notre Dame, in the first half, seemed to carry the Purdue linesmen of their feet, and Salmon’s terrific plunges, directed nearly always at MacManus. left tackle. netted from five to eight yards each time. 1t was by this steady succession OF line bucks that Notre Dame scored the first touchdown, twenty minutes after the kickoff. Despite the frantic attempts OF Davidson. Miller and Kaylor to stop SAL mon, the wonderful full back would dash again and again against Purdue’s line and ii had to yield. At its own one-yard line Purdue took a brace and held for two downs, but the third attempt Salmon tore through and scored The touchdown. He t1en kicked goal Salmon resumed his plunging after the kickoff. but he began to feel the effects of his own terrific onslaught. and Purdue held, often throwing him for loss SAL mon tried to punt. but his work was very. poor; in fact, every kick was either half blocked or he would tumble the ball TERRIBLE FOUNDING. With the ball in its possession. early I’m the game, Purdue used Miller and Kayior until they were nearly worn out and once Kaylor hurdled Notre Danes line and placed the rigskin on the latter’s thirty eight-yard line. tumble then resulted in the ball changing hands. Salmon was forced to punt and Osborne caught IL on Purdues thrty-yard line. He fumbled and Salmon fell on the ball. Then began the terrible pounding that resulted in the first touchdown. With the score to 0. Miller kicked off to Doar and Notre Dame failed to gain. Salmon punted. and Kaylor. Knapp and Miller carried the ball to No tire Danes forty-yard line. Here Miller brought the bali back. but later was obliged to punt. Knapp carried the ball eight yards. and then fumbled. The ball changed hands several times after this and on Notre Danes thirty-five-yard line Rebel fumbled and the ball went TO Notre Dame. Both teams, covered so thick with mud as to be indistinguishable, fought desperately. Purdue in defense. Notre Dame striving for a second touchdown. The ball was forced to Purdues twenty-yard line. and Salmon tried drop kick but failed miserably. The half ended soon after The second half was even harder fought than the first. and disputes and injuries dragged IL out until IL nearly dark. MacManus, through whom Salmon found a hole. was replaced by Davidson, and Emise took the latters place at center. Salmon kicked OFF and Allen caught It. Purdue fumbled repeatedly in the middle OF the field. but when Notre Dame got possess sion of the ball all, there was not the steady Purdue held like a stone wall. and the whole half was fought in Notre Danes ter hero than ever by repeatedly advancing the ball. and Kaylor seldom failed 10 gain by hurdling the opponents line Several times Notre Dame got the ball by holding for downs. There were disputes over possession OF the ball, so narrowly did Purdue miss making the required distance. IL could caslily be seen that Salmon had given up hope of puncturing Purdue’s line again. he did in the first half. for every time the ball was in Notre Danes possession he would try to punt IL out of danger. G. MILLER’S FEAT. Leslie fumbled on Notre Danes thirty fve-yard line when everything indicated a touchdown. Purdue held its opponent. however, and again had the ball. Kaylor and Miller continued to advance. but Knapp failed and he was replaced by thinner man, who started In by advancing the leather eight yards.
