Game That Was Full Of Spectacular Runs, Sensational Tackles and Terrific Line PIunges. COLUMBIA 6 AND SYRACUSE 6 LATTER SAVED BY THE BALL BARE LY ROLLING OVER THE CROssBAR. Work of the New York City Men Bet ter than Admirers Expected Georgetown Beaten by Carlisle. PHILADELPHIA, PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 27.-The Uni versity of Pennsylvania football eleven today defeated the Cornell team II to IL. The Ithacans kicked a goal from placement and scored a touchdown from which goal resulted in the first half, while Penn sylvania scored two touchdowns and kicked two goals in the second half. Never has more intensely exciting and uncertain contest been witnessed on Franklin Field. Until the final blast of the ref eree’s whistle announced the cessation Of hostilities there was a painful uncertainty in the hearts of the Pennsylvania sup porters. Cornell had thrice carried the ball dangerously near Pennsylvania goal, and once carried it over. Another touch down or an opportunity for second goal from placement would probably mean defeat for the local eleven. But as the time drew near for the close of the contest Pennsylvania play became more fierce, while that of Cornell grew correspondingly weak. and the game ended with the ball in Cornelrs possession on her twenty-five yard line. Spectacular runs, sensational tackles and terrific line plunges came with such fire. quency that the spectators were kept continually bobbing up and down in their seats. Both teams played brilliantly. Pennsylvania offense was superior to that of Cornell, and her defense play in the last ten miutes of the game has never been excelled by a Pennsylvania eleven. When the two elevens trotted on for the second half the score stood IL to in favor of Cornell. and there We’re few Pennsylvania ans who dared hope for victory. Gardiner, of Pennsylvania, kicked off to Coffin. of Cornell, on the latter’s thirteen teen-yard line, and Coffin ran the ball back twenty-five yards before being thrown. Pennsylvania was given the ball for hold ing, and after an exchange of punts the Pennsylvania players began a fierce on slaught on the Cornell line. Torrey finally scored a TOUCHDOWN from which Gardiner kicked goal. Then began what proved to be the sensational period of the days play. After car rying the ball TO within twenty yards of Cornells goal, Pennsylvania lost on a quarter back kick and Brewster at once sent the ball away from Cornells goal. Bennett, for Pennsylvania, again kicked over Brewsters head and ii was Cor nells’s ball within ninety-eight yards of her own goal. Brewster punted on the first opportunity, but the attempt was failure and Dale caught the ball of Penn sylvania on Cornells hirty-five-yard line. On double pass Dale gained twenty yards The ball was within fifteen yards of Cornelrs goal and the excitement was in tense. Mitchell, Pennsylvania big guard was brought on in PiedarskPs place On the first attempt he tore through Cornell’s line for five yards. Gardiner made four Mitchell four more, and then Bennett car ried the ball over for a touchdown tying the score The touchdown was made far to the left of the goal posts, and Dale was chosen TO punt out to Gardiner for a free catch, and moment later the ball dropped safely in GARDENERS hands. Immediately in front of the goal posts pandemonium seemed to have broken loose Gardiner kicked the goal, scoring the point which won the game. There were only five min utes Of play remaining and Cornell worked desperately to snatch victory from defeat but Pennsylvania defense was impre.y, nable. Lineup: Pennsylvania. Positions. Cornell. Richardson, Thomas. Left end. Iarlxin
