MARYLAND Bettys Arm Wrecks Clemson Bowl Hopes covered, this time on the Tigers IA. Jim Joyce carried on five Of the next six plays and scored from inside the one with 46 seconds remaining. Behind the steady gains of Cline and Mathis and the throwing Of White, Clemson marched for its second touch down its first time with the ball in the second half. Cline scored from the 2, but Whites pass for the extra points was broken up by Novak and the TerpS still led, 14-l3. The Terps struck for an eight-point lead on the first play of the last period. Betty threw a long one for Collins. who was surrounded by Usry, White and Mathis. But Collins was the aggreSSor of this four some and he plucked the ball and raced 10 yards to the end zone as the dazed Tigers floundered on the ground. Clemson matched this touch down by going 80 yards. Cline made 26 on the first play, and Mathis took a fair pass from White for 81. 1t finally was fourth down and 5 to go when White passed short and wide to Usry. who romped into the end zone. Novak again broke up the pass try for two points and Maryland led, 21–19. The Terps had to give up the ball. and with 1855 remain ing Clemson took over on its 25. Memorial Stadium was a roaring madhouse. Shingler and the second team were in the game, and Doug Daigneault made 81 the first pop out of the box. Shingler then hit his in-motion half back, Harry Pavilack, on . &c. yard pass to the Maryland IA. Daigneault made IL for a first down on the two, and then scored the touchdown. The q point play missed, but nobody cared as the homecoming fans figured the Tigers were home with a 1921 lead. The TerpS tried trickery on the kickoff, Novak taking it and passing crossfield to Dwayne Fletcher, but the Tigers smeared Fletcher on his own Is. Fletcher made 18. and the Clemson first team came back in the game. Novak was hurt on the next play, and Betty succeeded him. Joyce made 5, and Betty hit Collins with a pass for IA yards to the Tiger 48. Verardi made nine, and Betty hit Scott for Z and IL yards and a first down on the Tiger IT. Clemson took it’s last time out. but to no avail, for on the next play Betty danced out of the pocket and hit Collins with a 17-yard touchdown pass. White was defending, but he made the fatal error of being blocked out on the play by Collins. White was the defensive culprit on two of Mary lands touchdowns, and the lapses will hurt his all-conference ambitions. Clemson is noted for its bruising, perfection football, but today the Terps forced the Tigers into more mistakes than they’ve made all season. Schwarz recovered two FUN bles and Maryland didn’t lose the ball on a tumble. In fact. the Terps gained l3 yards when Jim Boff recovered a tumble by Joyce. Clemson had two passes in tercepted, the big one by Verardi and another by Pete Boinis in the first half, while Maryland had none intercepted. And Clemson stopped itself sew eral times on costly penalties, losing 64 yards for the day to a harmless 20 by the Terps. Maryland mixed its attack nicely, probably hurting the Tigers more from the winged T than from the spread or the I-formation. Betty was getting
