NEBRASKA STILL WINNING Defeats the Kansas ia Jhawkers by q Score of Sixteen to Nothing, KANSAS DEFENSE SURPRISINGLY STRONG Cornhuskers Plainly Not in Best Of Form owing to Light Practice since Game with Has keu Indians. Rrom a STAFF Correspondent LINCOLN, Nov. s.-(Special Telegram.) Nebraska university moved down the Kansas Jayhawkers on the gridiron today, scoring sixteen points and administering a shutout TO their opponents. Short halves OF twenty-five minutes each were played by mutual agreement, Kansas rather expecting a defeat and preferring to save its energies for next weeks battle with the Haskell Indians, while Nebraska has a hard proposition to face in Knox college and gladly acquiesced in the arrangement to cut the time. The result of today’s struggle, while a iforegone conclusion that the Cornhuskers would triumph, furnished a surprise by the splendid spirit OF the Kansans, who reisisted Nebraska’s charges with Spartan desperation and forced the victors to play TO the very limit OF their energies in lorder to win. Nebraska was able only to score a solitary touchdown in the first half. The feature was duplicated in the second half, and with a goal from field represented the sum total Of its enforced effort. The game was lacking in many OF the spectacular features Of open play which delight the onlookers and sets the rooter wild with glee. Only twice Bender rellieved the monotony by scoring long runs, but the game was devoted chiefly to the playing of straight foot ball and both teams in this regard performed creditably. Nebraska plainly was not on edge. Having been keyed UP to down the Haskell In / dams last week. Booth prepared for the Kansas game by holding only light practice-this from the fear that his men might go stale. Leftend shedd and his substitute, Follmer. both were prevented from playing because Of injuries. and Kan aau mada this uinU of the NahrarEa line their chief point Of attack. J~ayhRwkers Are Strong. Although out OF form, much Of the Corn huskers’ failure to pile up a greater score was due to the cold, unvarnished fact that the Jayhawkers put UP a strong article of foot ball. stubbornly contesting the Cornhuskers’ rushes and even making consistent Roadway when on the offense. Once the Kansans advanced the oval forty yards on a series OF fercely directed plunges, before losing It to their sdversaries. The nearest, however. the Kansans came to the Nebraska goal line was thirty-hve yards. Detailed notes compiled on the side lines show that Nebraska, by the use of straight foot ball tactics, carried the ball only a few yards short of 300, while the sum of the Ja~yhawkers’ efforts was but seventy-hve Fumbles we’re frequent at critical times, this cause outing off any chance that Kan sas might have had to score. and checking the Cornhuskers twice when they were close to their opponents goal. Nebraskans score Promptly. N~ebraska’s first touchdown came of the reel after the blowing of the whistle with Out little delay. After an exchange of punts. Booths p~roteges began a march for the Kansas goal. Seventy yards they adlvanced. the Jayhawkers fighting back stub bornly, but unable to stop Nebraska’s charges. Bender and Bell, the halfbacks, with thu aid OF a revolving mass formation on tackle, scored gains of from two to five yards on every plunge. Englehart at full back varied the program by battering the lime and never failing to make his dis ftanoe. On the three-yard line Btchen, left tackle, stole the ball out OF Euglehart’s arms, Bounding way like q shot, he raced the entire length of the field and across the goal. The trick, however, was witnessed by Referee Clark, who called the ball back and gave 1t to Nebraska on a ruling that ut had been called down and was not in play when Etchen wrested IL from the Ne braska fullback, who was PROSTATE on the ground. With the oval again in their pos session only one more plunge was needed and Englehart was through for the score. benedict kicked the goal, Fer the remalnder of the half Kansas fought back with commendable determination and held Nebraska for downs when Its goal line was threatened and the ball but twenty yards distant from a score, Bender Makes staS Play, An electrifying dash by Bender netted Nebrsska’s second touchdown, The Corn huskers had bucked their way for nfty yards, when the J~ayhawkers’ defense suddenly stiffened and threatened to hold for downs. Benedict, the Nebraska quarter, dropped back as II to punt instead, the
