Niddies Face First Real Test In SNU Today DALLAS, Tex, Oct. 3.-The question Of quality regarding the Navy football team is due for an answer today, with Southern Methodist supplying the clues in the Cotton Bowl. (Kick-off time is 4 pm, Washington time, with WRC broadcasting a play-by-play description.) A crowd of 10000 is expected to line the huge bowl where Navy achieved one of Its greatest football successes, VIC tory over Rice in the Cotton Bowl game of 1858. Middies UnderdOgs Today marks Nays first foray of the season into dan gerous territory. Its previous two opponents, Boston College and William & Mary, were not regarded as true tests and the oddsmakers are expecting the Middies to lose by six points tc the Mustangs. Once again, the logic behind the weekly polls suffers. The Middies are ranked 18th ma tionally, while SMU is not in the first 20, falling from grace because of a hairline loss to Georgia Tech last Saturday in Atlanta. SMU could just as easily have won that one, Nays scout and others on the scene report From losing it SMU may be in an extremely vengeful mood today. High Scoring Due A high-scoring game is the prospect. Both teams operate on the theory that passing and running are equally import ant. In Don Meredith, the Mus tangs claim to have the best quarterback in the business Navy planned to argue the point on the field where the chiefs of its alternating units Joe Tranchini and Jim Max field, are to do the debating. While Frank Jackson and Billy Polk give SMU the long, run threat from the halfback posts, the Midshipmen have their own explosive runners in Joe Bellino, a scatback, and hard-driving Joe Matalavage at fullback. This marks the first meeting between these two teams in % years and the third in history. SMU won the previous games, 20–7 in 1880 and 1877 the following year.
