FOOTBALL. Additional Football. on Page, 8. DANGER IN VICTORY Illinois Must Be Defeated Before Minnesota Will Have Fully Re- gained Her Place. t. Victory Over Iowa-1t Was Splendidly Won, but Was Only the First Step. The Minnesota football team has won the game from Iowa and won It hand somely by the score of 81 to o. This sweeping victory was due in no measure to the poor playing of Iowa, but was due to the good work OF the Minnesota team The boys did splendidly and deserve full credit for It. Before the game the University of Iowa was believed by DR.. Knipe and the Iowa alumni who were in possession of inside information, to have one or the strongest teams in her history Iowa fought pluckily to the bitter end and showed no perceptible weakening at any time in the game. Minnesota also played the same steady. consistent game throughout This feature OF steadiness and reliability through the entire time OF the play was one Of the especially crafty ing features Of the game. All this is extremely satisfactory to Minnesota. The faint left by the Ne brasl<a, defeat has been wiped out and the team has discovered and demonstrated that 1t can play football. But there is al element Of danger In the present situation. The team has now ar rived at the turning Of the roads. The one leads upward to higher honors and successes; the other to stasls and decline. If the boys at the Minnesota university regard the game as they should, 1T VIII be taken as the demonstration of the latest powers in the team which Is beginning to reach development, and be simply the stimulus for the most faithful work and strenuous effort in the future. II, how ever. any spirit Of self satisfaction results, the magnificent outcome Of the game may prove a calamity rather than a blessing. No Time for Rest. The team must not rest for moment The real work Of the season has but now Il. cotn 1NyJc n nvr1 work and concentrated attention and endeavor it is possible that both Illinois and wisconsin may be successfully met and defeated Unauestionably Illinois has this year one Of the best teams in her history in spite OF the fact that she has just been beaten by Chicago. The Minnesota team itself has demonstrated that defeat may be only the stimulus to better work. If Illinois can be defeated the Minnesota Wisconsin game will unquestionably take rank among the first in the west, what ever the result may be between Michigan and Wisconsin on the first Of November. The team can now go forward feeling confident that they have the loyal support of all Minneapolis who are really interested in the university and whose opinion is worthy of consideration. Need Of Education. There is no doubt that the Minneapolis public as we’ll as the Minnesota football team is in need of education in matters relating to football. A university football squad is neither a professional baseball team, performing for the interest and amusement of the sport Ing public, nor is 1t q. race horse, with a jockey on it’s back. Of whom the betting fraternity may demand that each heat shall be won or both horse and rider held up to public ridicule and censure. To win is highly desirable; it is the goal which is sought, and for which it is worthy to strive. But the spirit which demands victory at all times, Is the spirit which breeds professionalism in college athletics and introduces some of the worst elements into the ma gniflcent game Of football. IOWA ENTIRELY TOO SLOW Minnesota Piles Up Score Of Thirty -Four to Nothing for the Hsvkeyss, LONG END RUN FEATURE OF THE GAME when Ball Neared the lows Goal GOphers Resort to Line Plunses and Garry the Hall over the Line. IOWA CITY, Oct. 25.-(special Telegram Minnesota defeated Iowa decisively on Iowa field this afternoon. Three touch downs in each half told the story Of the game. Iowa was unable to stop the Mime sofa plunges and dashes. The score Of “a to 0 met the expectations of the Iowans, who looked for a total OF something less than forty. The feature Of the game was Minnesota’s use Of end runs for large gains. The Iowa ends and backs we’re so slow that these runs we’re allowed to get under Roadway and the runner was out Of danger, protected by Interference, before the Hawkeye second line OF defense came to the rescue. Occasionally Siberts, White and Durkie burst through and stopped these plays for lve-yard losses. In the beginning OF the game they did this twice on Iowa’s twenty yard ‘line and the Gophers were twice held for downs. On the Gophers’ next approach to Iowa’s goal, Harris used only line plunges and the touchdown was safely made despite Iowa’s desperate fight on it’s goal line. After this touchdown the Co piers used only line plunges when APP preaching the iowa goal and alternated end runs and line bucks when further out in the field. Extensively, Iowa was too slow to make progress. Roy Buckley, in the first Of the second half, made two fine tv enty-yard end runs, the back field running quickly and the tackles holding the Minnesota charges back. Iowa lost the ball for holding, now ever. and was unable again to play with snap. ochiltree and Hopenbeck were the only Iowans able to gain through the Minnesota line. The Gophers’ guards and tackles leaned up very close together and were very hard propositions.
