Terps’ Invasion |0f Miami Likely Last This Year Chances Are Slim Of Maryland Going To Orange Bowl ny MEhhELL WHIT ILESEx Maryland’s football squad left today on what. barring a miracle, probably will be its only trip to Miami’s Orange Bowl this season A month ago, before the Army draft, illness and injuries wrecked the first two backfields, the TerpS figured to return jan uary / as the Atlantic Coast Conference representative in the Orange Bowl. But sound trouncings at the hands of Syracuse and Baylor and little hope of regaining any key players in the future have dropped the Terps from the pic Iture. Thus tomorrow nights game with unbeaten Miami fig ures to be Maryland’S only Flor ida invasion with this years team. With Duke also having lost twice, and like Maryland, facing prospects of more defeats ahead the Orange Bowl bid at this writing appears to be between Clemson and South Carolina Regardless of which gets the bid the ACC representative probably will have lost two or three games Crowd to Exceed $4,000 But who represents the ACC in Miami New Years Day is Of little concern to the Terps al this time. The team that has scored only three touchdowns in three games is more concerned with finding an offense, ano stopping Miami as its first ster back up the ladder. Miami’s first football crowd Of more than $4,000 of the current season already is assured despite Maryland’s past failures in the Orange Bowl. The Terps lost to Oklahoma, TO, January /, 1854 followed by losing to Miami, 81 during the 1854 season, and bowed to Oklahoma, 20–6, last January. Coach Tommy Mont, an assist ant during the last three losses in Miami. ridicules the unknown theory He points out that the 81 loss came during an expert mental stage and preceded a Is game winning streak. The de- Ifeats by Oklahoma simply were the result of too much Oklahoma, Game to Be Broadcast The Terps left by plane at 10 o’clock this morning and for the first time in years had a workout scheduled the day before the game. Coach Mont departed from custom because of the short week in which to get ready for a Friday game, and because of the bumps and bruises from the Baylor game that ne cessitated a lighter-than-usu workout on Monday. The Terps expected a game time temperature in the Dos and were taking lightweight equip Iment. The second team prob ably will play more than it has in any of the three games to date. Miami’s team, 1916 winner over South Carolina and 27–6 victor over Boston College, is not particularly deep, but takes the utmost advantage of the heat in Miami in the fall and has a lopsided winning record at home. Game time is Oils, Washing ton time, and Station WMAI will carry the broadcast, with Bill Malone on play-by-plav.
