A pair of husky sophomore backs playing behind an all-veteran line had a big part in the Michigan triumph in the VOL verines’ 10th opening game, played before 67,739 fans. 1t was the first defeat for the Pacific Coast Conference cham pions. who opened their season last week with 1877 win over Utah. Slapped of most of its veteran strength by conference penalties for illegal aid to athletes, UCLA fumbled four times and each time Michigan recovered. Three times the bob bles led to Michigan touchdowns. Another Michigan score followed an 11-yard UCLA punt. John Herrnstein, sophomore fullback, whose father and uncle starred on Michigan teams of yesteryear, scored twice for Michigan and Sophomore Bob Ptacek, a 205-pound tailback from Cleveland, passed for another. The Wolverines scored the second time they had the bail. UCLA Halfback Louis Elias punted badly out of bounds on the Bruin 20 and six plays later
