Irish May Use New Giir1lnliicks Against Navy SOUTH BEND. Ind. Oct. IS (R. - Navy has beaten Notre Dame only four times in their 24-year-old rivalry but there is a feeling that the Middies may nail down their NTH victory in the series Saturday. The game shapes up as one of the best in the Nation this season with Navy entering it with a perfect record Of five straight victories and Notre Dame showing big improvement since it suffered its only loss. 21–7. to Michigan State Octo- Der, Is. The Irish bounced back from that licking to whip Purdue and IPasser Len Dawson. 22–7. Saturday with a “7-umbrellas” defense and a new offensive wrinkle. an unbalanced line. These two tactics could well be used against Navy, along with some new stuff now on the classified list. Hornung Injured Navy Quarterback George Welsh’s duel with Coach Terry Brennan’s Paul Hornung could be one Of the games highlights. Both are runners as well as pass ers. Hornung is being kept out of practice with a bruised thigh. but will be ready Saturday. The “7-umbrella” defense has been used some In every game by the Irish but really matured Saturday against Dawson and Purdue. The Boilermakers’ triggerman pitched one touchdown pass and gained l04 yards by air with II out Of 81 competitions but much Of this yardage did not hurt. He also lost SO yards being trapped trying to pass. Notre Danes strategy calls for seven men on the defensive line to rush the passer and four in the umbrella” secondary to cover the receivers. Against Purdue, the Irish broke into an unbalanced line lat times. Frank Leahy never had used 1t and this was Brenmans first shot with It. Rockne Memorial I’VE have o few plays from an unbalanced line but never got around to using them before” Brennan says. I’VE, were going to do it against Michigan State, but had our hands too full | to think about 1t. We polished lit up last week and tried 1t a few times against Purdue because 1t worked. But this doesn’t presage any multiple-type Of Tense, such as Michigan State has-we’re still predominantly Isplit-T.” The Inspiration factor always has been great at Notre Dame and should reach peak Sat- See NOTRE DAME.
