DEFENSE IS KING IN FOOTBALL THIS YEAR Defense is king in college football this year that’s why Michigan and Maryland are setting the mid-October pace. The Wolverines and the Ter rapins top the nations grid giants by making their breaks while on defense and capital izing on them. You can’t prove their strength by their yard age totals. In its last three games, Mich igan has scored only one of eight touchdowns on a long drive. Four of the scores were set up by tumble recovaries, one by an intercepted pass and another by blocked kick. The six usually were within 25 yards of the enemy goal. Today’s grid hopes are most safely entrusted ito resolute young men who are trained primarily in the art of haTas- sing enemy runners and pass CTS until they commit mistakes + with the help of jarring tack les. Michigan. for example, has forced four opponents Ito fum- ble 19 times and has recovered on h occasions. The Wolves have intercepted eight passes and allowed only 12 compile tions of the 46 aerials launch ed agfainst them. They have yielded a mere two touchdowns Of Maryland’s IA touch six were launched by intercepted passes, one by a blocked punt and another by a bad pass from center on an op- ponent’s fourth down play which put the Terps in an ad- vantageous position. Unbeaten Oklahoma, ranked third in the current AP poll, travelled only 34 and seven yards for two touchdowns in is important 200 victory ov- er Texas because of pass thievery. And for the best throttle job of the young season, look at Navy’s 21–0 victory over a fine Pitt team. The Middies held Pitt flo 59 rushing yards, gave the quarterback time to try only one pass which was intercepted and turned loose ends Ron Beagle and Earl Smith for their kick4blocking routine. Syracuse moved with a tumble recovery and an inter cepted pass to upset Army 13- 0. Washington surprised South ern California TO. and Texas A & M shocked Texas Chris tian 1916 with superior line play, particularly on defense.
