-Four Major EIevens Go Into Home Stretch With Clean Records four major college football teams remained undefeated and united today as the campaign headed into the home stretch and the crucial games that can make or break many a teams season. Notre Dame, Maryland, Bay lor and West Virginia are the sole members of the select circle-and at least two of them would be just as happy if the season were over now. Baylor still has three rugged South west Conference opponents to play and West Virginia has a date with a better-than-average South Carolina outfit. AS for Notre Dame and Mary land, there isn’t much to say about them except that there doesn’t seem to be any one on their schedules to challenge them. Both seem to get stronger as the season progresses. If they keep up their present pace, their first teams will begin to rust from a lack of action. Joe McArdle, who substituted for Frank Leahy, emptied the Irish bench Saturday in an effort to hold down the score against Navy. Leahy, who collapsed during the Georgia Tech game nine days ago, had his doctors permission to rejoin the team if he doesn’t exert himself. Scouts Left Breathless. South Bend was swarming with scouts for the Navy game and they came away breathless. One, shaking his head, said he refused to believe Notre Dame could be as good as advertised. Now I know” he said sadly. Maryland, too, used it’s regulars for only about half the game with South Carolina, but did win, 24–6. Jim Tatum’s Terps should win the Atlantic Coast Conference title and go on to the Orange Bowl against Oklahoma, which seems certain of taking the Big Seven title again. especially after it’s convincing $40 triumph over Kan sas State, its chief rival. The Sooners play Missouri this week. The chances of a Notre Dame defeat are practically nil. For the record they still meet Penn, North Carolina, Iowa, Southern California and Southern Meth odist. All lost Saturday. Maryland still has George Washington. Mississippi and Ala bama on its schedule. Ole Miss, which has been beaten only once by Auburn-stands the best chance of making things rough for the TerpS. Illinois Headed for Title. Illinois has one foot in the door to high society. The Illini have been tied but not beaten. If they can get past Michigan Saturday, they should have clear sailing to the Big Ten title and a bid to the Rose Bowl. After Michigan, they meet only Wisconsin and North western. There was some worry in the Illini camp that Purdue might present a problem, especially after the Boilermakers licked Michigan State the previous week. But Purdue couldn’t stop j. c. Caroline and Mickey Bates, the talented Illini’s sophomores. Unless one of them suddenly develops case of the gout. it looks like no one else will. The final was 21–0. The Pacific Coasts Rose Bowl nomination is wide open. At the moment Stanford, winner of all five of its league games, rules the favorite. But it still must dispose of Southern California and Cali fornia. UCLA has lost only one conference game. that to Stanford, and still has a chance if the Trojans and Bears cooperate. UCLA also plays Southern Cal on November 21 Four Handed First Losses. Southern Cal. Yale, Louisiana State and Utah are the latest to tumble from the unbeaten ranks, although all had been tied. Ore gon surprised by polishing off Southern Cal. 1877, while Dart mouth provided the form reversal of the Ivy League season by crushing Yale, which had hoped to walk off with the title, 32–0. Now the standings are in confusion. Mississippi beat Louisiana State, 27–16, and Washington stopped Utah. the leader of the Skyline Conference, 21–14. Michigan State and Georgia Tech, both Of which had their long undefeated streaks snapped the week before. rebounded with a vengeance. The Spartans whipped Oregon State. 34–6, and Tech swamped Vanderbilt. 43–0. Both still have rocky rows to hoe. The Spartans must play Ohio State and Michigan and
