Ledhy, Weaver Await Doctors Rulings Today Middies Optimistic About Back; Coach Drills Irish by N Medical reports from two fronts are awaited by Notre Name and Navy followers today to determine if John Weaver will quarterback the Middies and whether Coach Frank Leahy will direct the Irish in their clash at South Bend Saturday. At South Bend, Leahy insists he is recovered from his stomach ailment which caused his COL lapse at halftime during Notre Danes 27–14 victory over Georgia Tech Saturday. His personal physician, DR.. Nicholas Johns. has ordered him to remain in bed today. but unless complications develop it’s likely he’ll be released tomorrow. Weaver, who submitted to neurological tests at Bethesda Medical Center yesterday to see if he has shaken the effects of a shattering tackle in Navy’s 9–6 loss to Penn Saturday, will learn today if he’ll be permitted to play. Robert G. Smith, team ply sician, said Weaver appeared to be in good condition and that the tests were ordered as a precautionary measure. If Weaver is lost to the club. Navy will be directed by George Welsh. a standout in the Middies’ rout OF Princeton Hopkins to Start at End. John Hopkins, who scored Navy’s touchdown in the loss to Penn, has been elevated to the starting team. The 6-foot-3 Brooklyn sophomore will replace Don Fullam at right end. Thus the Middies will face the Ma tion’s No. l team with sophomores at both ends. Ron Beagle has been at left end all season Hopkins earned his promotion by fine play against Princeton and Penn. He caught passes for two touchdowns in Navy’s 65–7 victory over the Tigers and against Penn he shared the ball thrown away in desperation by Penn’s Bob Felver and raced so yards to score. Notre Dame has been installed a 14-point favorite. but the in tense Leahy can detect no reason for complacency in those odds. He has been conterrlng with various members of his staff for the past two days at St. Joseph Hospital in South Bend and yesterday a closed circuit television setup was ar ranged so he could supervise Notre Danes workout. A special micro-wave circuit was arranged by WSBT-TV. South Bend station, enabling Leahy to watch the Irish practice at Cartier Field, more than a mile away from his hospital room. Neal Welch, WSBT station manager, said the arrangement (See NAVY-NOTRE DAME, C-3.)
