BEHIND HOME PLATE The fate of the Interstate League, which is hanging in the balance right now, could very well be settled, one way or the other, during the present Minor League meeting in Phoenix, Arizona For the full story of what is going on, see Around Town With The Ed itor’ on the front page. $50 The Hagerstown High School Hubs Basketball team got off to a flying start on Tuesday night, when they took the measure of the Williams port High School Five by a score of 81 to 81. The two teams put on a ding-dong battle through the first three periods, with Williamsport ahead IA to IS at the end of the first period; the Hubs on top q to Is at the half and 80 to 30 as the third period ended. But in the last period the Hagerstown Five really went to town, scoring 13 points while holding Williamsport to one foul Kuhn lead the Hubs attack with seven goals and seven foul shots, for q points, while Crawford, with three goals and five foul shots, for II points, was the top scorer for Will Transport In the preliminary game, the Hagerstown Jayvees coasted to an easy win over Boonsboro High, the final score being SO to 10. Congratulations to the Gaels and the Gaelettes of St. Mary’s High School on winning the opening games of their 1928 basketball season. The Boys and Girls teams open ed their season against the York Springs team, with the Gaels win ming by score of A to 80 and the Gaelettes by the lopsided score of So to 30. Congratulations also to the Smiths burg High School Girls Fieldball team on winning the championship of the Washington County Scholastic League. The girls won all eight games on their schedule and held their OPP ponents throughout the season to a total of twelve goals, while the SmithSburg lassies amassed a total of “a. The college football season came to an end on Saturday with, of course, the two big games being the Army–Navy and the Southern Cali fornia-Notre Dame battles. The Army–Navy game again prov ed that when these two teams meet statistics don’t mean anything. On the seasons record of both teams expected a free scoring game, with Navy coming out on top but, as you know, Navy won by score of to 0, with Army showing tremendous defensive strength. While Notre Danes win over Southern Cal by a score of 9 to 0 was considered by some an upset, the records of the two teams-despite the fact that the Trojans had not lost a game-gave the edge, in my book, to the fighting Irish, main ly because of their tremendous defenSive strength. And talking about defense, I have never watched a stronger detense than that put on by Notre Dame in the last quarter. Sunday afternoons games in the professional league created some amazing upSets. The terrible shellacing that the Pittsburgh Steelers gave the New York Giants-the final score was So to lis something will never be able to understand. While the Giants have been playing in and out football since the season opened, no team in the history of the league has ever licked them like the Steelers did and I sure would like to hear what Steve Owen, the Giants coach, has to say about it. P.S. Steve Owen discussed with Harry Wismer on television Mon day night, the awful licking the Giants took and he offered no alibi. All he said was, that his boys were not up for the game and that the Pittsburgh Steelers showed him the greatest football he had seen in many years. Out on the West coast the “a to 81 win of the Los Angeles Rams over the San Francisco 49ers was also unexpected-at least by that Yoopu TooiIofc
