Ole Miss Punches Out N-7 Triumph Over Tough Auburn Team MEMPHIS, Tenn. Oct. 4.-Mis- SlSSippi coupled the running of three swift backs with little jim my LearS’s tossing to beat scrappy Auburn 20–7 today in the South eastern Conferences only game before a crowd of about $4,000. Ole Miss scored first on a break with the game barely three min uteS old, saw Auburn tie it up early in the second period, and then came back with a 70-yard march to 60 out in front to stay. The Rebels punched over the game-clinching score in the middle of the final quarter. Auburn’S ace quarterback, Vince Dooley, was injured early in the first quarter and had to leave the game, but his substitute, Dudley Spence, did terrific job of filling in. His booming puntS and pass ing were a constant headache to the Rebels. End Jimmy Mask set up the first Ole Miss score when he crashed through to block Spence’s punt soon after the opening kick off. Mask fell on the ball on the Auburn 5 and Lear sneaked over three plays later. Jim Matthews made his first of two conversions. Auburn tied it up after Bobby Jordan intercepted Lear’s toss on the Ole Miss 43 and raced to the ID behind fine blocking. Spence tipped to Lee Hayley on the eight for a first down. Three plays later ne threw to Hayley again for the touchdown. Joe Davis extra point made it Tall. Wilson billiard took the Auburn Kickoff on his own one and snaked to the 80. With billiard and Allen Muirhead eating up yardage in short bites and Lear passing to Jim Slay. the Rebels moved to the Auburn / in nine plays, Muirhead bulled off right tackle to score. To Clash With Georgia Sat. No doubt before the week is out you’ll read that the Maryland Georgia game Saturday viii be the rubber game in a friendly rivalry” 1t viii be the third game in an even series and certainly the RI valry is a good one, but don’t believe there’n be anything soft or rubbery about it. That friendly stuff ends when Maryland and Georgia get on the same field. It’s hard to imagine two more Furnishing offensive teams than Maryland--easily one of the top ten teams in American--and Georgia--an ambitious outfit eager to climb into the top ten over the wreckage of Maryland. Should Georgia win from Mary land in Athens, which is unlikely, Wallace Butts Bulldogs viii deserve top ten position. Georgia already has won three, the same as Maryland. Both are unbeaten and, if for no other reason than that, the game is Dixie’s head liner. In 1850 Georgia caught Mary land out of condition and won 27–7. Last fall Maryland, then on the way to the Sugar Bowl, blasted Georgia, 43–7. Seven other Southeastern Conference teams viii be busy in first class games. Unbeaten Georgia Tech returns to Atlanta to play Tulane; Louisiana State and Ken lucky, the Southeastern Confer ence’s two slow starters who seem to be going great right now, meet in Lexington; unbeaten Mississippi is Vanderbilt’s fourth straight tough opponent in Nashville, and Florida meets Clemson in Gaines vile. The remainder of the Saturday afternoon program is strictly mediocre with Tennessee playing Chattanooga in Knoxville, Virginia Poly against Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Wofford against Auburn in Auburn and North Texas State against Mississippi State in Stark vile. After Saturdays games South eastern teams generally get down to the business of meeting each other to settle the unofficial conference championship. Next week every game is an SEC counter. Georgia primed for the big Maryland game by blasting North Carolina State 49–0. Maryland was in deep trouble winning its first two games of the season from Missouri and Auburn but Saturday got all its guns firing in beating Clemson $50. Three Southeasterners Clipped In with three-fourths of the misery in Texas most miserable football Saturday in years. Tech whipped Southern Methodist 20–7: Kentucky won from the Texas Aggies 1917 and L. S. u. upset Rice 27–7. Notre Dame finished off the State Of Texas with 4 I4–3 victory over Texas. In all, the SEC had q great weekend by winning nine, losing two and tying one. Vanderbili’s 2o-2o count with Northwestern was the tie. Auburn’s 20–7 loss TO Mis-. sissippi and Tennessee’s loss to Duke, 10, were the only black marks. Other victories in notable week end were Alabama’s 2i-7 dominaton of Miami, Florida $50 over The Citadel and Tulane’s thorough going $50 walloping of Santa Clara.
