Could Not Penetrate nIinOis’s Line and Did Not Resort to End Runs or Punting. sTAHL WAS THE STAR MAN HIS LINE BUCKING AND RUNS WE’RE GROUND GAMERS. Several Accidents Occurred During the Game-What officials and others Say of the Contest. The blue and gold of the University of IL hnois triumphed over the red and white OF Indiana University yesterday afternoon at Newly Oval, and the football championship of the two great States. which has been hanging fire for two years, was decided by the decisive score of Is to in favor Of IL linois in game of two twenty-five minute halves. 1t was a dOwncast crowd Of red and white supporters that left the oval at the conclusion of the game; their team had met the enemy and had been beaten, beaten so hard that there was little pity expressed because Indiana had lost. To lose would not have been so bad. but to fail to score at least one touchdown while Illinois sent three men over the goal line was fiasco that caused the Bloomington men and their supporters to feel the defeat more keenly than any they have experienced in years. At no time was Indiana dangerously near the Illinois goal line and but few times did Indiana make the necessary gain. The Bloomington men entered the game full of confidence. but this was disturbed by the awful rushes of their opponents and later the aggressive spirit shown by In diana came at very infrequent intervals. The endurance of the Illinois men COM bined with their weight told on the Indiana men after the first half and the second half witnessed the Indiana team the defensive during almost the entire twenty-five minutes. NOT VERY AGGRESSIVE. The Indiana team displayed but little aggressive work and offensive play the red and white was woefully weak. Consid ering the weight and endurance of their opponents the Indiana men did fairly well on the defensive. But they were criticised by their own following for the lack of spirit displayed especially in the second half In diana made many Intellectual attempts to bore holes through the Illinois line and but few trials were made to advance the leather by end runs. Clevenger did not resort to punting until it was made necessary after the team had been successfully held by Illinois. Illinois’s principal gains were due to the heavy men behind the line who bombarded the Indiana line for steady advances and the trick plays and end runs. which were worked successfully. The crowd of $500 people enjoyed the game but it was remarked that there have been better exhibitions of football witnessed in Indianapolis. The game between the two elevens last year was more interesting as the teams were more evenly matched. Yesterday Illinois had every thing her own way, Indiana not even max ing a game fight for a touchdown. In the second half the Indiana supporters lost heart and this was followed by a decided weakening of the Indiana team on the field Before the game the Indiana follow ing cheered, the oval resounding with the echoes of the rah. rah rahs. The Illinois fha rr,fr hut were heard frequently and their yells encouraged their favorites on the field throughout the game. The bands from the two universities were stationed on opposite sides of the field and they played frequently. The crowd was a representative one of society and football enthusiasts from the city and State. Governor Durbin and wife and President Swain and wife, of Indiana University, occupied a box and their canes bearing the I. u. flag were waved excitedly early in the afternoon. SEVERAL ACCIDENTS. There were several accidents during the game. due TO the lively scrimmages between the two elevens. Stahl Illinois’s crack full back, who was the central figure In the contest. was forced to retire at the latter part of the second half because of a severe cash over his left eye. Cayou, who had been sent to full back for Illinois after Stahl relieved Stone at guard, suffered a broken nose within few minutes after he entered the game, but he remained in the contest suffering excruciating pain. There were several other minor injuries reported. Illinois used seventeen players in the game, the most of the changes being made in the second half while Indiana used fourteen 81, -. when he saw one of his players suffering an injury or showing signs of fatigue he sent another player in TO relieve him. The play during the first half was slow at times, and II was not until after the teams had fought up and down the field for fifteen minutes that Illinois awakened TO the fact that life and energy should be infused into their aggressive work to carry the ball TO the coveted goal Stahl was frequently called upon 10 carry the leather and each time he responded with a gain. He penetrated the Indiana line at will and hurtled skirted the opposing line for steady gains. His runs OF ten yards in the first half and twenty-five yards for touch down in the second half were features OF the contest. He was indeed the central figure OF the twenty-five men on the field Oftentimes. as the Illinois men pushed through for a gain, there were cries Of “See Stahl make the gain” Parker. Coons Cook Lindgren and Brundage were also successful ground-gainers in the first half and the reinforcement they received while making a line play or the interference az forded them on end runs aided materially In Illinois’s victory. The second half witnessed a cotere of new stars for the Illinois eleven in Jutton. Cayou. Siler and Huntoon. They pierced the Indiana line successfully and were effective in tackling and interference. Me Kinley. who played quarter. had very few misplays charged against him, his passing and tackling being OF a very effective or der. In fact. the entire Illinois team
