Champion, Mich, Oct 22.-Sil Hugo, a member of the Michigamme football team, died yesterday afternoon at the hospital here as the result of injuries received in the game Saturday with the local team Two other men of the Michigamme team were hurt. Cambridge, Mass, Oct 22.-Harvard’s practice yesterday afternoon was de voted mainly to the development of team play. Every man who played in the West Point game was out, eX- cept Matthews, who has a wrenched knee, and Roberts, Putnam, Daly, Baldwin, Burgess and Bewditch were out again for the first time since their injuries. In the signal practice Ker- nan was played at full back and Mfr fin at halfback. In the practice game the varsity fumbled badly and was once forced to score a safety. Gresham Poe, now Princeton sen- for, is the only one of the five Poes who have not made the varsity team and this is not from want of ability, but because of injuries that have kept the youngest Poe out of the game. When free from injuries Poe’s work has shown varsity caliber, but some thing has always happened to interfere with his usefulness. Like the other Poes, he is speedy and a sharp and sure tackler. There is a distinct difference be- tween hard playing and rough playing. Some players do not know it, appar- ently. Slugging and other foul tac- tics are rarely heard of now in the big games among those teams in which the spirit of sportsmanship is not subserv- tent to the desire to win. In La Crosse, Wis, there was played the other day. one of the toughest games on record. The Tomah and La Crosse High school teams were playing. Err win, left end of the La Crosse team, was kicked in the leg and taken from the field with a fractured leg; Miller, 1 the La Crosse left tackle, was slugged, but was able to resume play after a | few minutes; Holmes. the La Crosse left half back, was kicked in the stom- ach, carried from the field unconscious and thought to be seriously hurt inter- nally; Captain Brundley of La Crosse was struck over the eye and carried away unconscious.
