Late Vanderbilt Rally Defeats Memphis State MEMPHIS. Tenn, Nov. 18.- Powerful Vanderbilt, hogtied for three periods, broke loose in the final quarter for four lightning touchdowns to beat Memphis State today. 29–13. A crowd of 9,548 rain-dampened fans watched State jostle the Commodores for three quarters, but wilt under the passing of Quarterback Bill Wade. The Commodores’ touchdowns came on a sustained drive, Al yard run by Back Jim Tabor, and two plunges set up by long pass plays engineered by Wade, one of the Souths’ top pitchers. A safety added two more points. State scored on a 50-yard pass play and a long ground drive. The Tigers rammed home their first touchdown in five minutes of play and another in the second period.
