MICHIGAN MERCILESs IN ITS TREAT MENT OF THE INDIANA ELEVEN. Latter Not Permitted to score-NOtre Dame Barely Defeated by Northwestern University. ,ecial 10 the Indlanapolis Journal. Special 10 the Indianapolis Journal CHICAGO, Oct. 12-Eleven men from Purdue and an equal number from the Uni versity OF Chicago swan back and forth In a ninety-five-yard puddle in Marshall Field here to-day in a drizzling rain, and when they were through the score was 3 10 ;, and every one went home satisfied Purdue because il had eclipsed all past records by tying the score with Chicago. Stagg, his men and his supporters because the Maroon team had come out OF an uncertain contest with honors even. Neither goal line was crossed in the first half. The two teams. covered with mud and mire until they were unrecOgnizable, struggled desperately for a touchdown, with the contest to the advantage of Purdue, and only the impossibility Of prevent ing fumbles kept the men from Lafayette from making the coveted goal. With Miller and Smith making enormous holes in the Maroon line. Leslie, Russell and Cornell plunged through time and time again for big gains. but each time at the critical moment the slippery bail would fall from the players wet and numb hands and the opportunity was lost. Each time Chicago would resort to the punt 10 place its goal out Of danger and the contest would be resuIned. Once Russell succeeded in breaking through the Maroon line. and had a clear field except for Captain Sheldon. The little blonde Maroon made dash through the mud. and by a desperate dive downed the Purdue half back on the twenty-yard line Time was called with the ball we’ll into Chi cago’s field. Punting was resorted to by both sides at the beginning of the second half and after several exchanges Chicago got the ball on a tumble on Purdue’s thirty-five-yard line Then, with a remarkable brace, Stagg’s men tore through Purdue’s right tackle for gains OF three, five and even seven yards Steadily they worked their way down the field and finally. by an enormous effort threw Perkins over the line for a touch down. Ellsworth kicked out to Sheldon for a fair catch. but the captain failed to hold the ball and Chicago’s chance for making one more point was lost After the kickoff Chicago rushed the ball again down into Purdue territory. and seemed destined to score again, but a costly tumble on the thirty-five-yard line gave Purdue a chance which it improved by kicking down into the Maroon territory. After another exchange of punts the teams lined up on ChicagO’s ten-yard line, with the ball in the hands of Stages men. They carried it back to the twenty-five yard line and were forced TO try a kick A poor pass and a tumble by Ellsworth gave Purdue the ball. Russell took il, and aided by splendid interference. he made the only long end run of the day. going clear across the gridiron for gain of ten yards. with cries of Touchdown from the Purdue rooters ringing in their ears, the pig skin was carried slowly but steadily by the Lafayette men down to the four-yard line. A desperate stand was made there by the Maroons, but it was useless The ball went over in Leslie’s hands. Miller tried TO make a difficult goal and failed and the score was to s. Time was called soon after the ball was put into play again. Lineup:
