Navy Now Convinced II Must Tone Down Rugged Schedule ANNAPOLIS, Md, Oct. g. Northwestern’s football team may have done Navy favor by win ming so decisive1y Saturday. Directors of Navy football now show signs of realizing they can’t continue to play man sized schedule with boys. For the first time in the dismal postwar years, there are no “ifs ands or butts” Athletic officials at the academy right down the line are resigned to the fact they will have little to cheer about for an other year. 1t wasn’t so much the 22–0 lick ing dished out by the Northwest ern team, but the obvious fact that Navy didn’t have a chance after the first few minutes. The Middies got up only one threat during the entire game and the rest OF the time Northwestern tore through them almost at will. It took the dismal showing to convince Navy officials, even though they’d won only five games in four previous seasons, that they lacked the firepower for big battles week after week. Rip Miller Takes Blame. “I’ll take all the blame it’s nv fault” volunteered Rip Miller. AS assistant athletic director, Mil ler’s main job is to line up foot ball players and get them into the academy. 1--WE have only three or four real good players and that isn’t enough” Miller conceded. Coach Eddie Erdelatz, who was hired this season to replace George Sauer, was confounded and confused. He’d said he was satisfied with the Navy material, but that was before he had seen it against outside opposition. “I’ll be lucky if we can field a team for next Saturdays game, +” Erdelatz said worriedly. Navy almost ran out of backs before the Northwestern game was over. Four of them, Art Sundry, frankie Hauff, Jack Wilmer and Frank Attorney. were hurt. Three other flrst-stringers, Ends Tom Bake and Bob Mcdonald, and Back Vic Vine, were so banged up before they couldn’t even start. Schedule Toning Is Hinted. Just which tack the Navy will take now after trying three coaches in four seasons is prob lematical. Miller went around mumbling about really going after players. Capt. Howard Caldwell observed that next Saturday it’s Prince ton, and that’s more in our league” Did that mean Navy would tone down its schedule, which now includes the best representatives from all sections of the country? Gould be, could be-” said Capt. Caldwell thoughtfully.
