HU5kIE5 DEFEAT UTAH; Up5ET5 IN GAMES IM N. W. Storm flags were flying in the Palouse Hills today where a couple of touchdown tornadoes appeared to be brewing. In their l949 football baptismals, the Idaho Vandals ran wild Satur- day to crush the Willamette Bear cats, 79–0, at Moscow and the Washington State Cougars showed power a-plenty at Pullman with their 33–0 romp over the Utah State Aggies. It was different story at Seattle, where the University of Washing tons Hank Tiedemann raced 80 yards on a punt return in the last two minutes to give the Huskies 14–7 victory over the Utah Red skins. Coach Dixie Howell’s Vandals, tuning up in a King’s-X game against the Bearcats of the North west Conference, broke loose for 4l points in the fourth quarter to run up the nations most lopsided score Washington almost beat itself with 13 offsides and three costly fumbles, coming from behind TO halftime deficit to knot the count in the third quarter and pull the game out of the fire on Tiede- manns’ thrilling downfield fourth quarter dash-third longest in the history of the Husky stadium. Sta tistically, Washington was far superior, piling up IT first downs and 3S8 scrimmage yards to Utah’s four and IA. Among the Northwests smaller colleges, the Portland Pilots looked impressive in their home field 32–0 triumph over Central Washington of the Evergreen Conference. John F’reeman’s 71-yard run capped a three touchdown Portland attack in the second quarter.
