Jack MiIIer’s Kickinq Gives Southerners Gator Bowl Triumph BY the Assoeioted Press JACKSONVILLE, Fla, Jan. L. Jack Miller’s perfect kicking gave Clemson College surprise 24–23 d victory ever the University of Missouri, IN the fourth annual Gator Bowl football game today. A crowd of 35,273 saw everything football game can offer. Bus Entsminger, Missouri’s split-T formation quarterback, and Bobby Gage, brilliant Clemson triple threat tailback, lived up to advance notice and waged thrilling duel. Sports writer’s voted Gage the most valuable player of the game but it was the clever ball handling and hard plunging of the Clemson Fullback Fred Cone, together with Miller’s accurate kicking that gave the Southern Conference champions their one-point victory. Miller Kicks Field Goal. With minutes and IS seconds left in the game, Miller booted a dificult-angle field goal from the Missouri q to provide the slim margin of victory. Missouri later drove to a touchdown and kicked goal but failed of tie by one point. A third period Missouri safety set up Bob Robinson’s punt that rolled dead an inch from the goal, came when Gage gambled with passes deep in his end zone. His second try dropped behind the goal line for automatic two points to Missouri. II Miller and his Missouri counter part, Bob Dawson, were deadly extra-point kickers, each booting three. Cone scored two f1rst-quarter touchdowns to get the winners off to q good lead. Missouri fumbles lent the impetus to each, and Glenn son went 10 and GA yards to tally. Missouri Evens Score. Missouri evened things up in the second quarter on drives of 80 and 81 yards. Wilbur Volz intercepted a Gage pass to start the second march, and Entsminger sneaked over the goal to both touchdowns. A great play started by Cone scored Clemson’s third touchdown from the 9-yard line. Cone tossed out to Gage, who passed to Poulos in the end zone corner. 1t climaxed an 80-yard advance. Missouri’s third six-pointer was Just as spectacular. Entsminger lateralled to Dick Brazneu and he threw to Ken Bounds for 20 yards. Bounds grabbed the ball right between two Clemson men in the end zone. Gage Sets Bowl Record. Gage set a new Gator Bowl rec ord. Entsminger was the best in dividual ground gamer with II yards in II carries. Ray Mathews was best on the ground for Glenn son with 73 yards in II trips. The statistics were every bit as even as the score. Each team gained exactly the same yardage-298. Missouri had the running edge, 225 to 1856, and Clemson led in passing, | 112 to 73. Bob Martin, Clemsons blocking back, put his team off to good start when he smeared Missouri’s Wilbur Volz with the opening kick off on the Missouri 10. Three plays later Martin pounced on Lloyd Brinkman’s tumble on the 10. Cone Scores Through Guard. The rugged Missouri line held on two plays but pass interference was called and Clemson had first down on the two. Cone went through “a big gap at right guard on the second play to start the South Caroina eleven to its second bowl triumph. In its only other bowl appearance Clemson won over Boston College, 6–3, eight years ago in the Cotton Bowl. Missouri’s Tigers have yet to take a post season engagement. They previously lost to Georgia Tech in the Orange Bowl, Fordham in the Sugar Bowl and Texas in the Cotton Bowl. Left ends-oakes, Ebinger. Bounds, Left tackles-Fritz Boyd; Bullock. day could be achieved by a team that had been labelled a “thirc rater’ on it’s seasons record. Texas rose out of the travail of three defeats and a tie to smash highly-regarded Georgia, the South eastern Conference champion ano No. 8 in the national rankings, ir the Orange Bowl at Miami, Al tc 28. Texas wasn’t even in the first 20 in the final AP poll. If this doesn’t leave Joe Far grabbing for air, then look at some of the results in the lower strata bowls SOME UPSETS Clemson, the team that hadn’t lost a game all year or even al- lowed itself to be tied, wasn’t given much chance against the Missouri eleven that lost twice during the season. But the South Carolinians finally convinced the boys their seasons record was no fluke by measuring the Missourians in the Gator Bowl at Jacksonville. 24–23 NEVADA THROTTLED Nevada, which scared to new offensive peak and led the nation in total offense behind the sling shot throwing arm of Stan Heath, was throttled by Villanova team that had lost two games and tied one. Villanova won the Har5or Bowl game at San Diego. PIT, holding Heath to negligible yardage. Sectionally. the Southwest Con- ference added to it’s football stature while the Pacific Coast Conference lost no favor even though it’s CO., champions, California and Oregon, were beaten. Besides the Texas and Southern Methodist victories Baylor whipped Wake Forest, 207, in the Dixie Bowl at Birmingham, to give the koys from the cowboy country a clean sweep.
