find the story of the 1948 edition of St Mary’s Boys Basketball Team, together with their schedule. The boys journeyed to Washing ton yesterday afternoon to open their Season, but, of course, we had TO go to press before the results were known. The youngsters are all keyed up this year, and they are going to put their coach, Father Dausch, in an awful spot if they don’t come through, as they stop me at every opportunity to inform me that they’ve got a real team, and they’re going places. | had a short note from Oren Sterling, who was enroute to the Minor League confab at Minneapolis, and he told me that he would let be know what had developed there as soon as he got back. He told me, before he even left Hagerstown at the end Of the season. that there was no possibility of him re-hiring Culp as manager, and when | was up in York at the annual meeting last month, he told me that although he had many APP plications for the job, he didn’t in tend to do anything about it until after he had discussed the whole Owls set-up with Ossie Bleuge, Mike Rooms has been named man ager of the Mahanoy City Brewers, of the North Atlantic Class d League. Mike, by the way, recently rolled a record-breal1ing score of 68t in Hazelton Pennsylvania City Bowl ing League match. On Saturday | listened to two really thrilling sports broadcasts, both of which kept me on the edge of my chair until the games were over. On Saturday afternoon l tuned in the administration Califormia game, expecting, like many others did, that it would be a rather one-sided affair, but it developed in to anything but that, and up till within few minutes of the end of the game, il looked very much as if Southern California was going to pull the tremendous upset they did back in the thirties, when they snapped Notre-Dames long winning streak With the score 14–7 in their favor, Leahys boys didn’t look to have much of a chance, but they proved their championship calibre by smash ing downfield for touchdown and conversion, to tie the game at 14–14. And as if that wasn’t enough exelement, in the dying moments of the game, when South California, deep in their own territory, was forced to kick on fourth down, they fired, as an alert Notre Dame team diagnosed the play and grabbed the ball But time ran out before they could take much advantage of it, and so although the Notre-Dame squad was saved a defeat, it was without question a moral victory for Southern California. Then on Saturday night | listened to the basketball game between the Washington Capitols and the Baltimore Bullets, and that was really one for the book From the begin ming of the third period, it was nip and tuck battle every inch of the way, with neither side being able to gain more than two or three points advantage at any time. Then with just seconds to go and the Caps leading by one point, they, of course, tried to freeze” the ball, but an alert Bullet forward suddenly intercepted Bones” McKinneys pass to one of his players and let fly for the basket. Just as the ball left his hands, the final whistle blew, and everything depended on what happened, for if his shot succeeded, the basket would count, and Baltimore would win the game by one point. Straight for the basket it went, hit the rim on one side, bounced over and hit the rim on the other side and then dropped harmlessly out, to keep in tact the Washington Caps unbroken record of fifteen wins since the season opened. Kenny Ridenour, sponsor of the Hagerstown Cabineers. has announced that the opening game for the 1948-49 season at the Armory on Sunday afternoon, will be against the popular Merrick Boys Club, of Washington, d. c.
