ELEVEN TO NOTHING Was Mahetta’s Score Against ParksrSburg In SATURDAYS Game. The game yesterday was witnessed | by only a fair crowd. 1t was expected that the close proximity of two rival towns would bring out a larger crowd than was on the Fair Grounds Saturday. The weather was excellent for | the players, being not hot enough to fag them out and temperate enough to avoid the other extreme Of being chilly. A crowd of 40 or so wearers of the red and white came up with Park ersburg’ team,r They were rather in clined to think that P. A. G. would win the game, but they returned sadder and a wiser lot of rooters. Two 90 minute halves were agreed upon. Moore, of Marietta. and James. of Parkersburg, officiated as referee and umpire. Marietta was not able to put several of her best players in the field. The Parkersburg team averaged between 155 and 100 pounds, while the Marietta players had slight advantage on account of their heavier weight, but as several of the regular men were laid out the contest gave promise of being not so one-sided as was at first sup posed. Parkersburg kicked off TO Marietta. THORNLEY, made 40 yard run with practically no interference to clear the way. Marietta made gains of four and six yards. BY gains, rather slow, Ma rietta advanced the ball to near P. A. C.’s goal line. When the Is yard line was reached Cole was successful in his goal from the field. On the second kick off the old criss cross trick was tried and Griffiths made 35 yards. Cole was sent across the line for a touchdown. He kicked goal. Score, Marietta II; F. A. c., O, This score could not be changed and the game closed with this number of points in Marietta’s favor. Marietta played the worst ball seen on the grounds this year, or in fact ever witnessed on the home grounds. touchdowns on P. A. c., but owing to repeated fumbling this result could not be achieved. Time and again Ma rietta had the ball within a short dis tance of P. A. C.’s goal, but the latter tpunted down the field. The backs receiving the ball failed to return on account of fumbles and the distance had to be regained by hard bucks and runs when the same result again attained. The interference was poor on Mari etta’s part and during the most of the time, the play was slow; P. A. C.’s punts were only for short distances but Marietta was unfortunate in get ting or returning them The Marietta boys, of course, did not try to play ball with as much vigor as though theJ were playing large college team. OF course, the game Saturday was more in the nature of a practice game, but the score should have been larger and would have been had not Marietta made so many fumbles and mistakes. ‘‘”‘@‘s OTHER GAMES.
