SOUTH BEND, Ind, Nov. 30.-A tiny Texan. 160-pound Coy MCGEE, fired Notre Dame to a relentless 26 to 6 closing triumph over Stub born Southern, California to give absent Irish Coach Frank Leahy his first undefeated season since 1871 before a capacity crowd of $1,000 at Notre Dame Stadium today. AS slashing and explosive as the “coachless” Irish were in piling up their eighth victory against score less tie with Army for the season, they couldn’t stop the inspired Trojams from scoring the first touchdown against Notre Danes first stringers and making it a Is to 8 ball game until the final period. MCGEE, whose first name Leahy couldn’t recall for sports writers in early practices, streaked n yards for the first Irish score in the Sec ond quarter, seconds after he gall loped so yards on another break away. The Longview (Texo fire. ball launched a 13-point Irish at tack in the final period with an g. yard payof jaunt around end. With Leahy at home bedridden with cold and nervous exhaustion,” the Irish ploughed to Is first downs against Southern California IS nine and an amazing SIT yards by rushing against 108. Irish Pass to Second I’d. Yet, it took McGee’s phantom like fitting to spark them to their brace of 6-pointers in the second and fourth periods. The second Notre Dame touch down was fashioned of a 22-yard pass from Reserve Quarter George Ratterman to Substitute End Leon Hart, while the final score in the last quarter came on Second-string Halfback Gerry Cowhig’s 13-yard sprint. Southern California, held beyond the so the first half, exploded for a 45-yard touchdown drive late in the third period when Johnny Naumu squirmed over from the one foot out. It took a Notre Dame pass interference on a goal-line toss from George Murphy intended for Naumu to set up the touchdown. Naumu missed what then seemed an i’m portant placement try for point. That showed Notre Danes lead to 1876, but the Irish then loosed their full offensive fury. Starting on their IL after Southern CALIFORNIA; touchdown following kickoff, the irish thunderbolted to the Trojan in just seven plays and then stocky MCGEE darted clear around end for his second touch down. On that parade Quarterback Johnny Lujack ambled 81 and a pass from Ratterman to Floyd SIM mons covered 40 yards to Southern CALIFORNIA; IL. Even after the Irish sewed things up with their fourth touchdown on CoWhig’s run, the hard-battling Trojans weren’t finished. Bob Musick intercepted q pass by Ratterman, with less than minute left, deep in Notre Dame territory and |battled back to Notre Danes 2 before two Irish tacklers dragged him down. A penalty for too much time probably cost the Trojans second touchdown, something no other team had accomplished, because the gun sounded seconds later, Extra point specialist Fred Farley converted only two of his four conversion tries.
