GEORGIA TECH RECORDS 35–7 WIN OVER WAVE Yellow Jackets Rate As Top Contenders For Bowl Bid ATLANTA, Ca, Nov. 16-U.D- Georgia Tech rampaged toward a major Bowl bid today with a IS to 7 swapping of Tulane when George Mathews again. proved the man of the hour, accounting for two quick touchdowns that loosed a flood. of TALES against the big but baffled Green Wave. While a sell-out crowd of $4,000 cheered them on, the Yellow jackets of Coach Bobby Dodd broke loose their greatest offensive fire works of the season. 1t gave them seventh straight victory against only a close opening game loss to Tennessee. 1t made Techs Nov. 30 date with unbeaten Georgia the game of the year in the south-a tilt that will surely send the winner to the Sugar or Orange Bowl. Coach Bobby Dodd had moaned this week that his team was tired and broken-down and might lose to Tulane by 40 points. But ali his boys needed was a big gulp of Green Wave. They got it when Tulare tied the score for a mo ment iii the second period of Cliff Van Meters 57-yard gallop Mathews Immediately matched it with a break-neck 53-yard run of his own and the Yellowjackets. were off to make a field day. When they had to punt, Frank Broyles laid the bal. cold as a mackerel within the Tulane TOyard line. Within the first few minutes, Broyles was across with an 80 yard return of a Tulane quick kick but clipping caught Tech and the ball was brought back. But after Broyles laid a dead punt on the Tulane two = yard line Jim Keeton could only kick it back to the 49,. Tech worked it down to the 80 and Mathews took a hand-off from Broyles. then j~ump-passed 30 yards to Walt Killer for a touchdown Allen Bowen kicked the first OF five extra points which gave him a string of IA straight this year. After the exchange of touch down runs by Mathews and Van Meter, Broy1es intercepted a Van Meter pass on the Tulane IS and cantered to a touchdown within one foot of the sidelines all the way. Paul Duke, Tech center, gave a forceful demonstration of his ALL American eligibility in the third period. He plowed into Len Fin ley’s punt and pounced on it on the Tulane two. Duke was clutch ing the ball almost as 500 as he blocked it and the subsequent touchdown was easy for Bowen. Jim Still faxed and scored Techs final touchdown on a lazy 17-ya-d run around right end. In the wan ing minutes, Dick Hoot of Tulane broke loose for Sc yards to the Tech IL but Tulane lost it’s last chance on downs.
