FOOTBALL. STEvENS’S PLUCKY BUT UNEVEN FIGHT AGAINST COLUMBIA THE BLUE AND WHITE WINS EASILY. The Stevens Institute football team is composed Of light but earnest young fellows. who possess plenty Of grit and determination, but when they tackled the Columbia eleven the gridiron at Columbia Field yesterday they into a stone wall against which the plucky Hoboken youths could make no impression Columbla’s line was heavier and more strategic, and after the first ten minutes Of play the strength of the players on the lighter team was gone, and Columbia rolled up points at her during the remainder OF the afternoon. The Stevens players struggled valiantly for a few minutes after the start and their friends the side lines and in the stands encouraged them most earnestly. While Columbia put many substitutes in the game the local players worked earnestly and kept the winded Stevens men moving through the halves. the first of twenty minutes duration and the second five minutes less. Weeks and Berrien Columbias regular backs did not enter the game until near the close. while Captain Morley in the absence OF Chief Coach Sandford confined himself to watching the work OF his men from the side lines. Columbia played aggressive football through out, and the opinion was generally expressed that the team would do better all around work against Pennsylvania next Saturday than it did against Harvard at Cambridge last Saturday. After remarklng the lineup that two Of the players bore names Of characters in Dickens’s novels. the onlookers settled back to watch the slaughter. 1t little else The Stevens men were grassed repeatedly, only to scramble to their feet to be moved down again by the heavier players in the opposing line. At the end of the bat tie there was not enough wind left in the Stevens eleven to get respectable blast out OF tin whistle. At the start Stevens fought nobly for FIVE min utes and gave the Columbia forces all that they wanted. After about six minutes play the Column pa men forced the ball to the Stevens line and Ashley carried IL over for q touchdown Stevens’s 8 supreme effort had been made, and the rest was a Walkover; Columbia battered down Stevens’s defe1ce and made steady gains for every try; The centre and around the ends with every lineup and az 81 Ihe end OF the first half Columbia had lead OF % to o. The second half practically a repeution Of the first.
