ATLANTA, Ca, Sept. 29-W.H- That earthquake recorded at Pasadena may have been shock waves from N. C. States elimination Of Duke from the Rose Bowl field. which with othe- upsets and close calls Saturday scattered the preseason Dixie grid picture like a 10 cent jigsaw puzzle. Standing out we’re Mississippi State, running at prewar tempo with Shorty McWilliams back in the fold; Kentucky, conqueror of a Cincinnati team which had upset Indiana. and Georgia, decisive vic tor over a rugged Clemson eleven Along with Duke, North Carolima, the generally rated Number 2 team of the Southern conference, lost lustre in a tie with Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Alabama and Tennessee h d such narrow squeaks with Tulane and Georgia Tech that Frank Thomas and Bob Neyland yer moaning low at the thought of the schedule coming up. Neyland’s troubles start this very week when his Volunteers, who barely stalled out a Is to 9 victory over Georgia, meet Dukes Blue Devils on the rebound from their 10 to 6 lacing at the hands of the aforementioned N. c. State Col. lege. Neyland’s rivalry with Dukes Wallace Wade is one of the most intense in football and some fur will fly at Durham in the best game of the week. Outstanding coaching jobs to date have been turned in by Beattie Feathers, the crow-hopping Cherokee from Tennessee and the Chi cago Bears who prepared his State Wolfpack magnificently for their victory over Duke, and Paul (Bear) Bryant who has started off SEN sationally at Kentucky. Bryant’s Wildcats wound up at the bottom of most preseason polls Of Southeastern Conference strength but they boast two notable vic tories in as many tries – over Mississippi in their opener and over the strong Cincinnati Bearcats Sat urday night. Kentucky stayed on top all the way for a 26 to 7 win and gets a Well-earned breather
