Northwestern Defeats i Iowa State In Opener EVANSTON, Ill, Sept. 22.-(H- Playing in a driving rain,- North western successfully opened its gridiron season today by over. Whelning Iowa State, 10 to 6. The Cyclones averted a shutou, in the closing minutes with bril-. liant passing by Gene Phelps, aid. ed by Quarterback John Tenges. Tenges passed twice for 81 yards to Northwestern’s IS and then Phelps Tipped a 13-yard aerial tc Howard and Phelps plunged over touchdown.
