Twilight Tear, Diver Eye Horse Of Year Title at Pmhco Big Ten Providing Grid Thrills Without Changing Any Rules CHICAGO, Oct. 81. - Athletic Commissioner John L. Grifilth of the Western Conference. thumbing the record books, observed today that the Midwest is popping plenty OF football fireworks despite the fact it refused to follow the East’s lead In revising rules to step up Of fensiye play. The conference, Grifiith asserted, has quickened its offensive tempo perceptibly this fall without resort ing to such tactics as running with a fumbled ball, permitting passing anywhere behind the lin0 OF scrimmage and other liberalities adopted by a number of Eastern schools. In II league games to date the season has produced $50 points and net gain Of 2,251 yards, compared with 339 points and only 1872 yards for the same number OF contests last fall, Griffith said. Done without Rule Changes. 1.-THE Middle West has adhered to NCAA rules” he declared, “and the coaches in this section have been able to develop offensive plays that will score under the rules that have been in effect for a good many years” It’s the coach of a losing team, Griffith suggested. who clamors for rules changes that rarely appeal to the majority Of mentors. The Midwest acceleration in Often sive, Griffith pointed out, has been in both passing and rushing. The 11-game record this season shows 1,675 yards gained overland, COM pared with 1873 last year, while the 1914 edge in passing is 576 yards to 499. Large crowds at most sectional games thus far. he said, bear mute testimony” to the fact that football as played under the accepted COL legiate code still Is interesting” Official conference statistics released by Griffith disclosed that Michigan’s two stellar backs, Bob Wiese and Bob Nussbaumer, bowed out of competition in fitting fashion. The two Viz trainees played their final game against Purdue last Saturday and spanked the Wolverines to surprising 40–14 victory. Two Finish in Fine Fashion. Fullback Wiese spun through the Boilermakers for three touchdowns.

Dick can use his amazing speed on defense as well as offense. Dick believes it now. He tore through and hit passer Schultz of the Boilermakers before Schultz knew any Michigan man was in his neighborhood. The ball was fumbled and Ralph Hiikene, the other Michigan end, was on it at the Purdue 81. Derricotte got TO the % on a drive at center and Nussbaumer went around and once more for the % yards and a touchdown. That made it 40–14 and the offensive show was over. Michigan isn’t likely TO be the same again this season, with Wiese and Nussbaumer gone and others likely to follow. But today il is doubtful if any college could have beaten it with a running game
