GENERAL VIEWS SUMMARY. Denver, Colo. has $35,O00,0OO sur plus money on deposit. The U. 5. homestead law will DE extended to the Philippines. There will be- general advance in railroad freights on all roads east and west OF Chicago Jan. LIST. Deep snow in the Sierras and heavy continued rains in the valleys along the coast insure a prosperous year for California. The Transvaal Government is much e. lcerned about the escape OF Win sron Churchill and the officials are doing their utmost TO discover how he got away. Pension attorneys are piling upcases against the government as a result OF the war with Spain. Already $4,000 applications have been filed on behalf OF the soldiers of the recent war. Reports from Ladysmith show that typhoid fever and dysentery are more effective than the Boer artillery in reducing the strength of that garrison. The Bank of Germany has advanced its rate of discount to the highest figure ever known in the imperial bank, and the directors say that the position OF the institution is more strained than it has ever been before at this season. At Carbonate, Washington, the Carbon Hill company gave $500 to each widow and 800 to each child of a miner killed in the recent explosion. Mothers dependent upon their lost sons for support wese treated on the same basis as widows. “If the wal in the Transvaal continues for two OF three months longer the cause OF silver will have been won,” said former United States Senator Dubois of Idaho, n Of the silver Republican leaders, who was recently interviewed in Chicago. The Commissioner OF Railways re. news his recommendation for a trans continental air line railway from Kansas City, Mo-, to San Diego, Cal. Similar routes, the Commissioner adds, should be opened between the cities OF Chicago and San Francisco and Chicago and Seattle. A head-on collision of freight trains occurred last Monday ON the Northern Pacific by which four men were killed and several seriously injured. The collision was due to the mistake OF q telegraph operator. AS Don as he heard of the wreck he took to the hills and has not since been seen. The Carlisle Indians defeated the University of California at football in San Francisco on Christmas day by a score OF 2 to 0. California had the ball and snapped it back for a punt, but through mistaken signals it was allowed to roll over the line, where one OF the Indians fell on it, scoring a touchback-2 points. The total number of enlistments for the Spanish war and the Philippine insurrection was about 352 900. Nearly 100000 OF these were establishments, SO that the total OF enlisted men is APP proximately 100000. Judging from the applications already filed in Wash ington, m soldier in every twelve has become a pension seeker.
