A POOR WI1D-UP. Holy Cross Defeated in It’s Last Game Of the Season. BOSTON COLLEGE WINS, II TO 0. Worcester Team Weakened by the Disqualification Of Kenney, BOSTON COLLEGE WINS, II TO 0. Holy Cross college ended her most erratic season on the gridiron yesterday afternoon by suffering defeat at the hands of the Boston college representatives by the score of II to 0. The game was played on the South end grounds, Boston, before about 5000 partisan rooters. Before the game speculations were rife concerning the probable outcome of the contest, which has for several years past been the feature of Thanksgiving day in Boston, and there were not a few who picked the Worcester lads to win, not withstanding the enviable reputation made this fall by the wearers of the maroon and old gold. From a spectacular standpoint, the game was far from interesting throughout on account of the frequent delays and the incessant wrangling, and for the players themselves it was demoralizing. Holy Cross started off at brisk clip and argued stubbornly for touchdown, making persistent gains through the more Weighty oppOsing line until tumble on the eight yard line took the heart out of them. Both elevens played strong offensive game and occasionally Holy Cross dem onstrated her ability on the defense by holding when the Boston college men threatened her goal. Penalties were frequent and fumbles also occurred at costly times. Then, too, quarterback Sullivan, who played back on defense, did not do himself nor his team justice in handling Murphy’s punts During the first half, Holy Cross had decidedly the better of the game, although after 20 minutes of play full back Murphy was showed over for a touchdown, in gaining which he was aided materially by questionable decision of Ducette, which advanced the ball to the Holy Cross f1ve-yard line Despite the fact that both the Off Gals are good players, their rulings were far from satisfactory, and great ignorance Of official obligations was shown, Doucette SHINING especially in this regard. The Holy Cross men can not, however, plead this in extenuatiOn of their defeat as officials are chosen to decide all points of play and their decisions must stand. The claim that is made by the local representatives. and it is a just one-is that by the removll of Capt. Kenney from the game, on account &C a fracas with Capt. XII ley immediately after the first touch down. the backbone of the team was broken and the players lapsed into a listless, dreem mood. The two College captains were sent to the side lines, but Holy Cross lost a great deal more than her rival. as it can be said without any disparagement to the Boston college captain, that Kenney is without doubt the strongest, most aggressive player on the eleven, and can easily outclass Kiley’s work He was using himself unsparingly and displaying his prowess to the utmost and he felt it keenly that in the last game he should ever play for Holy Cross on the gridiron he should be ruled out. His absence was noted most especially when kicking tactics were called into play. Powers, although with practice fair punter was not having had it-clearly distanced by Murphy in every essayal. especially as the latter was aided by the fumbling Of the Holy Cross man receiving. Altogether, Murphy was the star of the two elevens. His line bucking was Irresistible, his kicking cleverly executed, his Interference always good and his tackling clever. At end plays it was a toss-up as to which side played the better game. Sullivan, who replaced Kiley, did fairly well for a substitute: but o’Reilly, who opposed
