Due TO Splendid Tenn Work. AS lengthening shadows cast themselves over the gridiron at Ames Avenue park Sat urday evening eleven bruised and battered men skunk from a field where they had bat tied for Nebraska. Tauntingly TO their ears came tho shouts of the viCtors. Iowa had defeated Nebraska by the score of 30 to 0. Bitter indeed was the draught that Ne braska quaffed and 20 the dregs 1t drank The past season has been a most ingorious one, but the defeats that Nebraska has had have been b0rne with the stoicsm of the Spartan. Through all OF them cleaned the ray of hope that she might redeem herself in the annual battle with Iowa. But all the life and heart and moral backbone were squeezed and pushed and battered from her. victory over the conquering Iowans would have meant more than one can realize. 1t would have given the supporters of Nebraska renewed courage, it would have quickened the determination and added inspiration to the varsity eleven and it would have been a beacon in view of the remaining games OF the season. Its moral effect would have been incalculablc. But Nebraska was not equal to the task allotted her and she went down W ueledI sU luBlOTlOuS ana SO uecisive as to throw pail over all of the wear ers OF the cream and scarlet. Tho gods who in mythology are presumed to preside over the elements could not have favored the players and the spectators with more perfect day. The crispness OF delightful Nebraska autumnal afternoon was tempered by the bright rays of the sun. Not a breath of air was stirring, These condilions, combined with the great interest al ways taken in the annual foot ball contests between the Universities of Iowa and Ne braska, resulted in a splendid attendance at | Ame5 Avenue park. | Crowd is Enthusiastic. | Long before the players arrived the seats In the grandstand were being filled and a Dig crowd surrounded the ropes in the north side OF the gridiron. There were parties of students representing both universities. These were conspicuous because of their 10y BUSINESS and confidence in the ability of their team to win the victory. They rent the at mosphere with college yells, class songs and characteristic yells appropriate to the occasion. Matured men and women shared the enthusiasm Of the younger sets and the presence Of ribbons and streamers-either | old gold or cream and scarlet-indicated | that they were alumni. Others who were partisans because of their residence either | In Iowa or Nebraska. or because OF having friends in one university or the other, or | for any one Of numerous other reasons Joined In the enthusiastic spirit of the hour and contributed to jolly time while awaiting ! the arrival of the teams, A big tallyho | loaded to it’s extreme capacity, was driven over the field and to the din were added the songs and yells of the boys from Creighton Medical college. Soon there was a futter in the grand stand. Pretty maidens arose excitedly and waved flags and ribbons until in their enthusiasm their faces glowed with excite ment and approached in color the scarlet ribbons which, together with the cream, betokened that they were Nebraskans. Cap tain Williams and his braves had pranced out on the field. Nebraska cheers had hardly subsided before lusty-lunged Iowan shouted Here come the Hawkeyes” Another mighty cheer arose and it seemed that the admirers of the Iowans outnumbered the Ne braskans. 1t was now nearly time for the game to start and the crowd had constantly been augmented until it was even larger than many Of the crowds heretofore in attendance upon these games, even when they have been played ON holidays. From the small army of players who swarmed over the diamond clad in heavily padded sweaters and complement of foot ball armor, twenty-five picked men took their places on the chalk marks and waited for the word to begin the struggle 1t was to be friendly contest and yet grim determination was depicted upon the countenance or every man. The Nebraskans were praying the fates to deal kindly with them and importuned fortunes favor The Iowans were determined that their brilliant record should not be blighted by defeat. Touchdown In Three Minutes. Three minutes after the game was started Iowa had made the first touchdown Following short kickoff and a wretched fun BILE by Nebraskan the Hawkeyes followed the ball right down the field to the west goal which Nebraska tried so desperately to protect. TITS cakewalk,” shouted an exuberant urchin, and his utterances came near expressing the truth Try as they might to check the onward advance Of the Iowans the Nebraskans were unable TO and gains through the line and around the ends were made at will by the wearers OF the old gold. Never once did they lose the pig. skin until II had been thrust over the line Even at this stage of the game, foot ball enthusiasts who viewed the spectacle knew that Nebraska was Outclassed The touch down SO early in the game was unfortunate 1t grieved the Nebraska rooters and they never fully recovered from it’s depressing effects. But the Iowa contingent went wild In its enthusiasm and filled the air with a deafenipg roar. That’s the way the first touchdown affected the spectators On the part OF the players it gave the Iowans confdence, but the Nebraskans were dazed, dumbfounded and 1t is charitable to attribute 1t to this ouchdown-completely demorallied. Following this touchdown the Nebraskana had their first opportunity in offensive play ing. Following the kickoff by Nebraska the pigskin soon came into its possession on punt and the crowd which filled the grand stand and surged along the north side line had plenty Of reason to cheer, for Captain Williams men fought with a desperation and succeeded in breaking through Iowa’s defense for several gains. On Iowa’s twenty yard line an opportunity presented itself for a spectacular play. Crandall tried a drop kick from the field. The spheroid sailed majestieally through the air ana Nebraskans
