SOUTHPAW PASSER-P -PUNTER IS OREGON’S BIG GUN Curtis Mecham, six.foot south- paw passing and kicking star, turned in one of the outstanding performances of this or any other campaign as oregon stampeded Southern California. 20–⁠6. in Los Angeles Coliseum. Mecham fired three touchdown passes and kept the struggling Trojans in difficult ty with Q remarkable display of power and control bunting. Oregon closed its l940 season with such a scoring rush that the Webfoots had to be considered a possible dark-horse entry in the current race on the golden slope, This despite the fact that Coach Oliver lost 10 lettermen includ- ing what he termed his starting backfield. The trick was that Oliver had a second quartet that was even better Oregon this season fields a vet eran team with the exception of the fulback, where Oliver now starts with young man named Dunlap. The key back spot, which is left half, is amply filled by Fob Robin, a hard-driving run ner, who is backed up by Frank Boyd, a fine passer and punter. Duke Iverson and Roy Ell alter nate at quarter. Oregon has a line to match. The Eugene outfit will stir up trouble for its coast rivals and Texas. which it tackles in Austin, Dec. 6. The Lemon Yellow tackles Santa Clara, too, in Portland, Nov. II. Oregon certainly can’t be charged with picking it’s spots.

Time Since 1915 Strong Kicking, Passing By Mechom BIuzes Way To 20–⁠6 Triumph LOS ANGELES, Oct. 11.-Oregon Universitys greatest football eleven In many years wrecked the come back dreams of the Trojans of Southern California today and scored the first triumph over the Cardinal and Gold since 1915. Led by a 6-foot southpaw kicking and passing ace named Curtis Mecham, oregon registered a 20–⁠6 victory over Trojan machine which showed surprising spirit in bouncing back from $50 whipping administered by Ohio State week ago. Halfback Mecham fired three touchdown passes to his teammates, one in the second period, the other two in a hectic third, and kept the everything TrojanS in hot water all afternoon with a brilliant display of power and control punting. Southern CALIFORNIA; S star, Quarterback Bobby Robertson, kept his mates in the game-and ahead in statistic department-by throwing pass that went for Troy’s only touchdown. 1t was spectacular 70-yard play, with Right End Bob Jones on the receiving end and sprinting the last SIS yards for the touchdown.
