Football. .CORNELL’S COLORS GO DOWN CHICAGO UNIVERSITY WINS BY SCORE OF II TO 6. Cornell’s Work Was Below the Aver age-Indians Beat old Pennsylvania. Chicago, Oct 14.-For the first time since 1894, when Michigan beat Cornell at Detroit, strong. eastern eleven was today decisively defeated by a western team. Cornell university and the Uni versity of Chicago elevens met on Mar shall field, Chicago, winning by score of II to 6. Full halves of thirty live minutes were played. This fact was in Chicago’s favor, the maroon players being evidently in better condition than their eastern opponents, who weakened perceptibly toward the close of the sec ond half. The result was surprise, even to Chicago’s strongest adherents, as the western team was without Cap tain Kennedy, who was laid out in the Notre Dame game of two weeks ago. In this respect did Cornell show SUI periority, and that was tackling. The Cornell backs and ends seldom failed to nail their man hard and sure. The Chicago ends were more uncertain and high in their tackling. but their work was effective enough to prevent any material gains from end runs, and Cornell, in consequence, was often forced to punt. Cornell scored good, hard line bucking. In the line, where the fasteners were expected to show the greatest superiority, Chicago did the better work. and in the second half the Cornell men were played off their feet, Stalker tearing through time and again for more than the distance. 1t was straight. hard football throughout, and so fierce that four of Cornell’s men, Starbuck, Walbridge Caldwell and Payne, were compelled to retire in the second half. Few trick plays were attempted and only two were successful, Stalker making twenty two yards on a delayed pass, and Hoy fifteen yards on a double pass This latter play was tried twice afterwards by Chicago. but Right End Cross nailed his man for a loss each time. Chicago outclassed Cornell in the quickness in which the ball was put into play, and also displayed more eff fective interference. The interference of Cornell, when the backs attempted to circle the ends, was too compact, and for this reason was often put out of the play altogether by the ends and backs, who tore it to pieces some time before the ball was fairly started. The punting on both sides was decidedly off color, particularly in the first half First Young, who did most of the kicking for Cornell. kicked the ball into his own line, and this ultimated in a touchdown for Chicago. Chicago scored another touchdown and kicked a goal in the second half. Final score: Chicago, II; Cornell, g.
