MILLER PUTS PAY FOOTBALL NPAN Chairman OF Yale Council Says College Athletics At Critical Stage NEW YORK, Oct. 14.-R-Com. m%ercialized, big-time football was put on the pan today by Ogden D. Miller, new chairman of the athletic council at Yale, once the biggest OF the beginners. Fresh from witnessing old Els 50–7 defeat by Penn, on top of a 1914 licking by Virginia in the opening game, Miller told the New York Football Writers association that college athletics and even school athletics in my opinion are at g criteal stage. . . intercollegiate foot ball is nov reaching a peak of enphasis in many colleges which ii reached elsewhere many years ago. II believe there will be a decline or leveling-off in the next several years and that even graver problems are ahead for some who will have to consolidated and retrench drastically. Professional football is one signpost along the way; those who nurture the golden hope Of continued high revenues in the future are, I fear, headed for trouble. Until the problem resolves itself Yale, and others, may be in for lean years. We believe we are on the right track. We believe we will carry through and merit public respect.” Miller conceded football receipts had made a contribution for good” in providing of funds to make pos sible athletics for ALL” Beyond that gift to college OPP portunities,” he declared, II would like to have someone list for me other tangible benefits it has brought. Big time football doesn’t in: crease the educational stature Of any institution; it doesn’t make loyal alumni; it doesn’t bring increased gifts to the alumni fund or to class funds except in a few isolated cases. even the sports it helps to car ry,” the Eli athletic chieftain on tinued, “were carried before the days of astronomical gate receipts. -. Acceptance of recreation skills as a normal and valuable part of ccllegi. ate training. was the result OF a changed philosophy Of education in America. Comprehensive programs would undoubtedly be carried out tomorrow in many institutions II gate receipts from football were reduced sharply. There will always be ~intercollegi. ate contests at Yale; all of our sports will be. continued to every possible degree. If economic conditions. force us to retrench we will retrench. In places where the fewest students will be affected and where the essentials of our total program will be least i’m. paired” +. ..- Declaring that more than 40 per cent of Yale’s undergraduates were self-help students, Miller declared Yale felt athletes who need help should be treated neither better nor worse than non-athletes. That belief does not give us any %holier-thanthou complex. We hold to it because in 24O years we have found that it best furthers the real purpose of the university” ‘

.LionsArePicked To Beat Georgia In Close Game Rested Gophers Given Edge Over Buckeyes; Terps Underdogs NEW 1O1h, OCt. lo.-COnQuCClIlR the weekly interview with footballs willing (but frequently misinformed) crystal ball: Alabama–TenneSsee – Alabama is the mystery team of the South eastern Conference, but Tennessee, off its decisive defeat of Duke, appears to be the Sherlock Holmes to provide all the answers. The Grim son Tide, reputedly exceptionally strong, hasn’t played major foe yet and this vote, therefore, goes to Tennessee. Notre Dame Carnegie Tech-Tech teams of the past have been tough meat for the Irish. This is another year and it will be major surprise If Carnegie keeps the score within reasonable bounds. OBSERVATION-DISCLOSURES, with a sophomore find in Sal Mirabito, may give the Big Red some trouble. but Cornell is so we’ll drilled and strikes with such devastating quick ness that Syracuse victory seems iii POoolO1C 4ilC UdllOI ID CdSl, dS usual, for Cornell. Michigan–I Illinois Bob Zuppke, canny coach of the Illini, engineered one of 1895 greatest upsets in this game. History can, and does, repeat. but SO far as this corner is concerned. We’ll take Harmon, Evashevski & Co. Washington State Stanford Stanford, lone unbeaten, united major outfit in the Far West, has a standout back in Norman Standlee and a tricky offense. Washington State has tied Southern California and beaten California. In a guam Diary of this sort, only the coin can help. Stanford. Texas Aggies Firmly Backed. Texas Aggies-Texas Christian Stringing along with the Aggies to the bitter end. Colgate-Duke-Duke has had time to get over the Tennessee setback and rates the nod in this one. Penn-Princeton-Penn may not be quite so good as the 50–7 score against Yale indicates, but should get past this one, especially since the Tigers seem to be having line trouble Penn. Pitt-Fordham-The Panthers have surprisingly well and this should be fiercely contested all the way but Fordham is the choice. Columbia = Georgia Columbia teams, given exceptional coaching, usually are strong until injuries play hob with small squad Georgia is young but potent. Out of the hat q. Harvard–Army – With Johnny Hatch an uncertain Army starter, the choice is Harvard. Buckeyes Seem Over-Rated. Ohio e-Minnesota–It begins to seem as though Ohio State was over-rated. Minnesota is rested and ready-or should be. Minnesota. Wisconsin Northwestern – Having hurdled Ohio State, De Correvont, Clawson, ct al, appear safe enough in this one although Wisconsin’s passes may spell trouble. Still, Northwestern. Missouri Iowa State-Looks to be too much Christman for Iowa State. Oklahoma State – The Sooners’ defense hasn’t looked strong, but they have plenty of scoring power. Oklahoma.
