Their tested strength stands out, along with that of Mississippi in this topsy-turvy young season which already has seen an almost unpre- cedented number of major elevens defeated, deadlocked or menacingly pressed. To them will be added the winner of Saturdays collision between Ohio State and Northwestern, Stanford and Santa Clara, Notre Dame and Georgia Tech. Tennessee beat Duke, 13–0, Satur- day. Minnesota downed Nebraska 13–7. Michigan, fresh from its 41-O conquest of California, turned back Michigan State 21–14. Cornell opened its season with a $40 vic- tory over Colgate. | Yale, Dartmouth, New York U and Holy Cross were victims of up- sets, and Army escaped by an eye lash with 20–19 win over Littlf Williams College. Northwestern issued storm warn. ings by starting the season with z 40–0 victory over Syracuse, while Ohio State won a 17–14 struggle from Purdue.
