TENNESSEE SAD BUT WISE AFTER ROSE BOWL 60 Southern Cal Had Too Much Power in l4.O ShutOut UmatSU EEeS4 DtAH CUssss BSnoeas Pasadena, Cal., Jan. 2-(UPl- Tenessee’s football team rolled back toward Knoxville today, sadder’ sorry, wiser and richer. The volunteers were sadder be- cause they were beaten 14 to 0 in the Rose Bowl, sorry because eouth- ern California giants banged them from pillar to post, wiser because they had had c look at the best football team In the country, and richer because their curt of tho seu- out game netted them upwards of eti6,000. Tenessee’s proud record exists no more. They went into the Rose Bowl ynbeaten in 23 games, and uliscored upon during the 1899 season. Now the Vols will have to start eil over again. Because the Arojans messed up that beautiful record by banging acrose touchdowns in the second and fourth quarters. The l4 to 0 triumph of the eouth- ern CallfornianS marked their sixth straight Rose Bowl win, and it was ahsoiutely deserved. As Bob 2uppke, famed Illinois coach, said after the game, “The Tvojans didn’t 9ineese Inc Vols, they just knocked them oR the feld.” .’ 5i. - And that is just what they did. Using 2S tremendous specimens of manhood, Southern California re- lied on power, and still more power, to tear the Tennessee defense apart. From kickoff to the final whistle the Trojans piled it on, And Ten nessee, game as it was, simply couldn’t withstand the ceaseless pressure. No one was higher in praise of the Southern California )uggernaut than Major Bob Ney- land, coach of the beaten invaders. Some Team “They were terrific” Neyland said, T have never seen Q better team than Southern California was In the bowl today. Tho line was great but the backileld was the do- ciding factor. Lawdy, there was no end to tho big, fast, and tough backs they threw at us. I want to especially congra tulate Amby sohindler. He not only was c great runner, but he ran the team with brilliance. His choice Of plays was oil that e coach could ask” The tipoR on how good Schindler was comes from the statistics, The entire Tennessee team gained 7i yards net and echindler’s personal gain was 76 yards. It was Ambrose, playing his last game, who carried or passed the ball on every play in Southern Gals first touchdown march of 47 yards. Iron legged, steil.ribbed, he riddled the Vols supposedly impregnable defense with his bull thrvists. And 1t was Schindler, lternating with Jack Banta, who swept 86 yards In the closing minutes of the game to account for tho second touchdown and put the game on ice. Schindler’s quarterbaclEing reached It’s peak In the scoring of the second touchdown. With one yard to go, fourth down, he faxed buck and then drifted Q pass to Krueger to score. Tt fooled me completely” Major Neyland said. Tt was daring, bril- liant play-calling, and Schindler de. serves nod for doing t.” Schindler was ably abetted by four other California plle-driving Backfield men. Grenny LansdeL plowed forward 48 yards Of gain Banta had 36, Bob Peoples go arc Doyle Nave 2S. Only Johnny Butler swiyei-hipped sopohmore, did any. thing in an offensive way for Ten- nessee-he picked up 70 yards, most of 1t the hard way. Cafego, shack led by a bad knee made only one yard, and the remainder of the Vol backs accounted for an embarras. singly small amount Of yards.
