First Half Is Enouqh As Holy Cross Nails Brown by20.0 PROVIDENCE, r. l., Oct. 21.-A potent and alert Holy Cross football team cruised expertly up and down the field in the first two periods here today to accumulate 20 points, then dug in to smother its opponents second-half surges and defeat the Brown Bears, 20 to 0. Approximately $4,000 saw Holy Cross quickly take advantage of Bear errors to score within a few minutes after the opening whistle, add another touchdown later in the first period, and third in the second. The Crusaders played all their Of fensive football in the first half, then let the frantic Brown team batter itself to pieces on a rock-like line in the last two periods, which saw play almost entirely in Holy Cross terri. tory.

Football Giiants Get Oper Hardest Hurdle Yale Fights to Top Of New England Football Heap Penn Beats Harvard, Elis in Successive Weeks; Dartmouth Unbeaten Boston, Oct. 23.-6UP).-A surpris- ing shuffling os the cards appeared today to have brought a cocky Yale eleven to the top in the New Eng land football picture after Satur- days clashes sent a promising Har- yard team tumbling beneath Penn- sylvania’s attack. Yale’s 20 to l5 win over Army at New Haven, Conn, and Harvrads upset 22 to 2 loss to Pennsylvania brought a shift in expert opinion which had picked Harvard to end the 1889 season the superior team of the northeast. Both Yale and Harvard, however, still have to reckon with Dartmouth’s big green who gained a IA to o win over La fayette to remain in the undefeated ranks. Yale, rated as an underdog af- ter its 2 too defeat at the hands of Penn, threw its entire strength against the Army cadets to lead 20 to 13 in the closing minutes. Then, by a clever tactical move that brought jeers from the Ellis own cheering stands but prevented Army from gaining a touchdown through its second and third string-dotted line, Yale froze for two plays and then game Army 8 safety. Coach Ducky Pond sent Bill Bell in to take the ball on his own IS and run purposely back over Yale’s goal line to give army the safety. Only 10 seconds of time remained after the play, and Yale effectively had guarded its victory margin. Penn Takes Two Penn’s second visit to New Eng land in as many weeks was as dis astrous for Harvard as 1t had been for Yale. The Ellis, however, had al- lowed only one touchdown in facing the Quakers, while Harvard was no match for the running and passing attack of Penn. Captain Harlan Gustafson, lanky end, led the Penn attack and scored two touchdowns. Completing five passes for a total gain of over 100 yards, he gave the most spectacular exhibition of pass catching in the Harvard stadium since the days of Yale’s Larry Kelley. At Hanover, N. H., Dartmouth’s attack against Lafayette centered about Bob Krieger, converted back playing his first game at left end. Defensively, he repeatedly threw La- fayette for losses and in an end- around play in the second period scored Dartmouths second touch- down. Dartmouth, which held Navy to 8 3coreless tie in the previous week, found no trouble in breaking through the Lafayette line. Temple Shut Out A newly-inspired Boston College eleven over-ran battle-Scarred Temple for 19 to o win. Coach Frank Leahy, dissatisfied with B. C’s showing againct Florida, had made six changes in the Eagles line and the result proved the sagacity of his move Holy Cross new ground attack was too strong for Brown which lost to the Worcester Jesuits 20 to 0 at Providence, R. I. Holy Cross smash ed through Brown for three touch- downs in the first half and then held ground for the remainder oi the game. Clashes between New England’s smaller colleges were featured by a Tufts Northwestern struggle which ended in scoreless tie. Bos- ton University’s Terriers took the air to defeat Upsala College 13 te 3, with B. U.’s sophomore Walter Williams tossing passes to Jim Mo- Donald and Gus Sullivan for the two touchdowns. With the Army game safely in the bag, a determined Yale University eleven today turned with a shuddel to preparations for next Saturdays game with Michigan-a Michigan which scored 85 points with dis tractin gease against pathetic Chi. cago.
