Maryland and George Washington Lose Close Tits to Virginia and Butler Duke Bows in Nerve 7ingIing Struggle With Pitt, 1914, as Ace PIoce-Kicker Muffs plays interspersed with horrid fumbling and breaks, which turned promising offensives into disheartening disappointments. Duke, with q brilliant kicker in McAfee, started out as il to emulate its 1888 winning style-punt and wait. McAfee’s first effort showed the Panthers deep into their own territory, and they couldn’t dig out. Once they halted a march on the ., but shortly after the ire pressible George knitted through the left side of the Pitt line, reversed his field and galloped 81 yards before Dick Cassiano hauled him down on the Pitt 7. Four plays later Robbie Robinson nudged over from the 6-inch line, and Tony Ruffa placekicked the goal. A ball which popped out Of Wes McAfee’s arms like polished water melon and was gathered from the air by John Dickinson gave Pitt its break early in the second period. Dickinson charged down the side lines to the Duke 10, and on the next play Emil Narick tipped pass to Cassiano in the end zone. Ben Kish placekicked goal to tie 1t up at Tall. Later in the period, after Gordon Burns had recovered a Pitt tumble on the Pitt A, Leonard Darnell rambled 10 yards on a double reverse. The Blue Devils pecked away until they reached the 10, where Ruffa passed to George McAfee in a corner of the end zone. | Here Ruffa, with a record of II straight conversions, missed, and with his wide kick went a tie. Midway in the third period Robinson waved through an open field infested with Panthers until he reached Casslano. He lodged the Pitt safety but as he whizzed by Cassiano hooked his arm and the ball went tumbling along the ground Cassiano recovering on the Pitt a. The Panthers then tossed their most brilliant attack, a yard-byyard, foot-py-foot, inch-by Inch drive which carried to the Duke “a where, with fourth and four, Narick vhirled the ball down the field to Cassiano, who caught it and lunged over the goal as he was tackled. Kish Cool in Clutch. Kish, calm as millpond, booted a perfect extra point, and his swinging leg carried a Pitt victory right with 1t. The Blue Devils opened with everything they had in frenzied efforts to retrieve the lead, but in the waning minutes 1t was the fiery un. predictable Panthers who had the upper hand, and the Blue Devil threats faded almost before they started. Cassiano, Ernie Bonelli and Kish were stalwarts in the Pitt backfield which on the whole, couldn’t dc much with the Duke line. Robinson was understudy to George McAfee ir the Duke stellar role.
