De Correvont No He|p As Oklahoma Routs Northwestern Sooners Pile Up $50 Tally as Mates Errors Offset Stor’s PIoy EVANSTON, Ill, Oct. 7.-Oklahoma S Sooners, the boss team Of the Big Six Conference last year, did everything right today to fashion a staggering 23-to-0 upset triumph over Northwestern in spite of some brilliant operations by Bill De Cor revont. The biggest opening day turnout in Northwestern’s gridiron history. $4,000 spectators. came to see how De Correvont, the Nations most pub licized prep school star two years ago, would do against the big boys. They saw the blond youngster stage a brilliant performance after an unhappy start, but nothing De Core Won’t could do was anywhere near enough to Offset Northwestern’s mistakes. De Correvont’s Efforts Wasted. De Correvont went into action late in the first period and lost l3 yards on two plays as the Sooner forwards crashed through North ~ 11C CdlllC OdCA ldlC in the third period to return kick of 40 yards. race 13 yards around an end and give dazzling exhibition of footwork in slipping through the right side Of the Oklahoma line for 28-yard gain. A tumble nullified his gains. Oklahoma scored its first touch down in the first period when Full back Bob Seymour rammed it over. Beryl Clark led another advance few minutes later and when Northwestern braced on its IS, Quarterback Dick Favor kicked a “a yard field goal from placement. Hahnenstein’s second tumble on his own 4-yard line in the third period led to the second touchdown. Clifton Speegle, Oklahoma’s clever Junior center, recovered and Seymour crashed over again. Wildcats Fail in Air. The final touchdown came as Northwestern staged a desperate aerial attack in the last session. The heaves had been clicking, but John Martin, a substitute Sooner fullback, reached up and snatched a toss from Chambers and skipped SO yards up the sidelines across the goal line.

NOtre Dame NOtTe DuW4 A tough football schedule is as much a by-word at Notre Dame University as block and tackle” and when a Notre Dame team goes through its scheule undefeated, that is why the Irish are seriously considered as national champions. Many football teams in the ma ton, however, line up schedules which are just as tough as that Of Notre Dame on paper, that is. But the Irish schedule differs in this respect: Every team on the Notre Dame schedule points for the Notre Dame game, simply because a victory over the Irish is likened TO a vic tory over the New York Yankees in baseball. Take the Irish in their first game of the season. The opposition was furnished by Purdue University. Purdue prepared for that game by scouting the irish all during the 1888 season. Purdue pointed for the Irish, but dropped a 80 decision. Last week Notre Dame played a Georgia Tech team which had prepared for Notre Dame from the opening practice. But the Irish smashed Tech, 17–14 Saturday the Irish face Southern Methodist’s great football team, a team which tied the Oklahoma Sooners. and which outgained the Cklahomans in tieing. Oklahoma, you should remember, defeated Northwestern 23–0 last week. Add those statistics to the fact Southern Methodist is pointing for the Notre Dame game. SMU realiyes what a victory over Notre Dame would add to the Mustang prestige, record and National ranking. Football Ratings Don’t take the football ratings systems, as doped by such so-called experts as Deke Houlgate, DR.. Baker, Polings’ and Collyers’s, too seriously because there is no ac-

IF AND BUT DEPARTMENT We were caught off guard early in the week when Doc Crumbly came rambling in the office all smiles. We had the feeling he should be in ter rible humor after watching eleven Of his pet teams go down to defeat out Of the 81 games he picked. But no he reminded US that he had stated that the lndianalowa game would be the closest of the day. 1t must have been the all-time champion as far as thrillers are concerned. The first quarter ended with Indiana out front 1O-7, but it was 2O-l7 in favor Of Iowa at the half. Three-quarters through it was 1920, Indiana and ended 1929, Iowa. 1t is necessary. to make quick revision of power over the football map. Southern Cal on the coast may be the far vests best, but hasn’t thing on Oregon or U. c. l.. A. at this writing. Northwestern suffered shocking 23–0 defeat while rolling up some 235 yards more than did Oklahoma. The power is there, but fumbles and a lack of polish made the Wildcats look bad. The Big had a large day as it sent two Of it’s best teams to victory over Big 10 clubs. Nebraska also blew over a good Minnesota team In addition to the Sooners fine bid. Holy Cross and Fordham in the east were clawed by southern giants leav ing Pitt appearing to be just about as good as any in the east. Just like old times. Of the preseason favortes for national honors, only Tennessee and Michigan look real good and neither of these teams can boast a very healthy schedule. Carnegie Tech won its game against Temple, but was pressed and Notre Dame got by with field goal once more. 1t might be that Layden is following in the foot steps Of Rockne and is saving the explosion for top notch team, but that is hardly likely. And now we know where Elon is. N. Joyce, sage Of Pittsburgh’s huge Oliver building, tells us it is just 10 miles from Duke u. and is a conner. IlS IL BItdI you lCuI IL All the time. A new monogramed finger nail file to Mr.. Joyce. Well here we go again. N-WESTERN STATE – The Zippers look around for another week.
