South and West Turn on Grid : Title Heat IntersectionuI Games Abound; Furmon Win Is Leading Upset NEW YORK, Oct. 7.-Southern and Western football teams. a step or two ahead of rivals from other sections, get down to the serious business of settling conference titles today, while outstanding teams of the East, Midwest and Southwest continue to concentrate on intersectional and interconference clashes. Although Alabama and Louisiana State, two of the Southeastern cir cults top-ranking teams, engage in intersectional clashes in the North east with Fordham and Holy Cross, respectively, and Georgia Tech faces Notre Dame at South Bend, no few er than eight others in the loop engage in conference contests. The Kentucky-Vanderbilt clash looks to be the only close one of the lot, as mighty Tennessee takes on Sewanee, Tulane plays Auburn and the sur prising Mississippi State team meets Florida. In the Southern Conference, Duke, defending champion and the team to beat again this year, plays Col gate, an Eastern rival. But there are four conference games-North Carolina, current leader, against Virginia Tech; Clemson against North Carolina State, v. M. I. against Davidson and Richmond against Washington and Lee. Trojans Try Comeback. Pacific Coast and Rocky Noun tain Big Seven Conference teams also are concerned mainly with their own groups. Southern Cali fornia, picked the Coast Conference No. l team until it was tied by Oregon, tries a comeback against Washington State. Oregon plays Stanford and U. c. L. A. faces washington. California tackles its old non-conference rival st. Mary’s. Utah, Big Seven leader, seems to have a soft touch against Wyoming, while Utah State plays Colorado and Colorado State meets Brigham Young. In contrast, Iowa Indiana in the Big Ten and Iowa State-Kansas IN the Big Six are the only major Midwestern Conference tits. Ar kansas and Texas Christian meet in the only Southwest Conference game. The East, which has no formal or ganization. offers only the Yale Columbia “Ivy League” contest. Nevertheless, there are plenty of good games in these sections: Min nesota-Nebraska, Oklahoma North western, Missouri–Ohio State and Texas–Wisconsin, on the Midwestern front; Baylor Oklahoma Aggies and Centenary Rice, in the Southwest, and Pittsburgh-West Virginia, Cor nell-Syracuse, Navy–Virginia and Temple-Carnegie Tech, in the East. Furman Victor BY Surprise. Southern teams also played lead ing roles in the rather dizzy Friday night doings. with Furman turning IN the biggest surprise by whipping Georgia, 300. Wake Forest added to Southern Conference prestige by trimming Miami. 1870, and the Citadel best Presbyterian, 1877. In reverse, South Carolina, which spoiled Villanova’s unbeaten record last year with a tie, took a 400 beating from the Wildcats at Philadelphia. Boston College downed st. Joseph’s in the other major Eastern game, 20–6. In the Midwest, Kansas State conquered Marquette, 80, with a 50-yard drive and a fourth-period field goal by Jim Brock. Drake, Missouri, Valley Conference leader, beat Grinnell, 1870. Bradley Tech tied st. Louis University, 90, and Omaha beat Montana State, 1910. New Mexico turned in its second victory over Rocky Mountain Big Seven team, beating Denver, 7–6. Texas A. and NJ, rated one Of the strongest in the Southwest Conference, had to come from behind to whip Santa Clara, 7–3.
