irish” VICTORIOUS WITH LATE SCORE TonelIi Spirits 70 Yards, Tables Later to Beat Trojans, 13 to 6. BY the ASsocia ted Press. OUTH BEND, Ind, Nov. a. With two minutes left to 70 | IN . deadlocked 6-to-8 struggle. ~ an Italian youth, Mario Tonelli, came to the aid Of the Fighting Irish” today, enabling Notre Dame to triumph over Southern California, Is to 6. The crowd Of 10000 was thrown into an uproar of excitement when Tonelli, husky fullback from Chicago, suddenly broke loose from Notre Danes 17-yard line and raced 10 yards before he was brought down ID yards from the Southern Cali. fornia goal. Two plays later he smashed 8 yards over the line for the touchdown that | gave Notre Dame a glorious finish to its 1887 campaign, with six victories in nine games. 1t was q fitting climax for the fiftieth anniversary of Notre Dame football, for the Irish” had made a brilliant comeback after having been | pushed around the field for two periods, outplayed by the Trojans. Trojans Ahead at Half, | SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA held a 6-to-0 lead at the half as the result of a touchdown pass tossed bv Grenville Landsdell to Gene Hibhs in the second period. But when the Irish broke loose in the second half. they were entirely too shifty and blocked too perfectly for the Cali fornians. Andy Pupils, PLAYING hi. final game for Notre Dame, broke away for a 58-yard touchdown run to tie the score in the third period and then. when it looked as though the game would end in a tie, Tonellt came through with his long, snaky | runs Tonelli would have scored on his 7o-yard gallop except for the determination of Owen Hansen, Trojan left halfback. who pursued Tonelli down the field after the Irish” back was clear of almost all opponents and brought him down from behind with a frantic plunge.
