Cornell Conquered in a Close ly Contested Game. ONE TOUCHDOWN SCORED The Outcome of the Struggle Rather Dist ppointing to Princeton Root ers and Encouraging to Cornell Partisans – Six Thousand Specta- Ex-President Cleveland. gers smut out the COrneli VARSITY eieNeH here this afternoon, but only made one touchdown themselves. To Princeton men the outcome was rather disappointing, as the knowing ones had predicted as high as twenty points for Old Nassau. To Cor nell men the game was a source of encouragement, even though victory did not come to them. The Princeton kickers, with one or two exceptions. outweighed the Cornell men, and in addition to the weight handicap the Cornell players had to contend with a large partisan crowd facts. and Princeton’s long established knowledge of football as 1t should be played, the showing of the Comedians was an agreeable surprise to their follow who hope to see the Tigers whip Yale. Princeton’s Personnel. Princeton’s men are larger, heavier. and more matured than has usually been the case here. HiIlebrand, Edwards, Booth, Crowds, Reiter, and Ayres are well known in the football class and all are first-class men. Black the new half back. is one of the best line buckers that has ever worked for the Tigers. Palmer. at left end. and Newcomer appear to be in the class with Cochran. Geer. at left tackle, is surprisingly powerful and plays fierce. aggressive football. Mills, the big freshman guard. has every qualification needed TO be successful except cool-headedness. He is hot-tempered and in an interchange of fist accompaniments in today’s encounter he was. with Lueder, of Cornell, ruled of by Umpire Dashiel Rosengarten. who was tried at quarterback, is light, does not handle the snap-backs quickly, and funbles kicks. HiiIebrand the star. The veterans played well up to the usual standard Hillebrand, the captain, being the star. He was partially responsible for Princeton’s only touchdown. for by the quickest kind of line breaking he got through on Quarterback Young and block ed a punt, at the same time falling on the bail. This was near enough to Cor nelrs goal 10 make IT an easy task for Princeton’s backs to beat their way through the Ithacans for the only touch down of the game. The Tigers played straight football the greater part of the game. but resorted to the time-honored tandem play on several occasions for good gains. Their best work close formations and interference. CornelIs line. though light in comparison to that of the Jerseymen. played defensive game that won the admiration OF the spectators. Cornell Poorly Handled. In the handling of Cornell’s team some fault must be found with a bIunder In the first half The Ithacans were making fair gains through the heavy bucking, but when Princeton’s thirty-five-yard line was reached Cross tried an unsuccessful place kick for goal. Not more than 5000 persons, including ex-President Cleveland turned out TO see the game. II was 3:16 o’clock when the whistles were blown by the officials and the battle began, and Cross kicked off for Cornell to Hillebrand, who came back fifteen yards. Ayress kick landed the ball on Cornells thirty-five-yard line. Some hard line bucking and Rosengarten’s clumsy muff put the leather exactly forty-five yards from Prirceton’s line. ROsengartsn’s Poor Work. Cornell tried the closest kind of formations, with the result that the backs were downed almost in their tracks. They were too near the line to get properly under way. On the third down Starbuck punted to Rosengarten, who made such a mess of the catch that he was downed by Alexander on the ten-yard line. Ayres punted poorly, and the ball was forced back to Princeton’s thirty-five-yard line. Then followed Cross’s ineffective try at place kick for goal. Cornell soon after tried the much-talkedof trick of letting the end rush, opposite Princeton’s center, snap the ball back, to be thrown to Whiting, who was protected by a wall of interferers. Geer, however, got through like a bulldog and nothing was gained. Young once more tried the quarterback kick, and this time it proved fatal, for Hillebrand broke through and fell on the oval. Tigers BOne-BrenlSinE Assault. The Tigers backs now began a bone breaking assault on Cornelrs right line. Steady line-bucking by Black and off-side play by Cornell put the ball on the lat ter’s four-yard>line, and Reiter, literally fitted by his comrades, got over the line for a touchdown, from which Mills kicked a rather difficult goal. 1t had taken Is minutes “A As seconds to score. For the rest of the half the play was chiefly in Cornells territory, but her goal was never seriously in danger. 1t was at this period that Mills and Lueder had a mix-up that resulted in the disqualification of both. Ayres kicked off at the opening of the second half and after a series of punts Cornell began an attack which threatened for a time to be successful. Whiting made twenty yards on a second trial of the lend snap back trick, and Starbuck got ten on the guards back interference” made a pretty twenty-yard run, but the ball was lost for holding. CorneIPs Attack reflective. Cornells attack, however, was ineffecti’ve, and Black, Ayres, and Reiter began another attack, which proved the best of the day. Steady play against guards. tackles and Removed from 457 Pa. Ave.

Line ON BIG ELEVEIS AT PRESENT THE ADVANTAGE SEEMS TO BE WITH THE TIGER TEAM FAST CROWD FROM CORNELL Harvard and Pennsylvania VIII Keep an Anxious Eye on the Work Of the Men From Ithaca Yale Kept Busy by the Indians While Princeton Scored Only Six Points ON COrneIl-Day’s Games. NEW YORK, Oct 22-Some definite Idea as to the relative strength of the big Eastern football eleVens and also as to the strength of Western and Eastern teams was furnished by the scores In some of the games today. For the first time 1t is possible to compare Yale with her old time rival, Princeton. Although at this period, when the teams are all rapidly rounding into form, good deal must be allowed for the Improvement possible in the two weeks that have elapsed since Cornell defeated the Carlisle Indians, yet the fact that Yale today was unable to Improve to any extent Corneu’s score over the redskins and that Princeton shut Cornell out, after a desperate bat tie, IT is true. apparently shows the I1gers to be the stronger at present. The margin is small, but it is in Prince toms favor nevertheless. The COrnel team, as at present made up, is undoubtedly the fastest that has ever been sent out from that college, and its future games will be watched with interest and not little apprehension by Yale and Harvard partisans. Pennsylvania in its game with Lafaycite hardly showed its real strength, Notwithstanding the large score it ran up on the little college that lowered Pennsylvania colors two years ago. Mud, ankle deep, is not conducive to accurate handling Of the ball or favor able for any long plays, and with a firm field to play on it is not doubted that the score would have been even more one-sided than it was Harvard, as was expected, had the easiest kind Of a time over the strong but poorly trained eleven of the Chi cago Athletic club. just prior to the Chicago players departure for the East they lined up against Northwestern university, and were defeated to 0. The decisive way in which Chicago defeated Northwestern today will undoubtedly draw a large crowd next Saturday to see them line up against Pennsylvania at Philadelphia, and
