WASHINGTON ALABAMA LOOM AS ROSE BOWL |. S.U.MayGei Into Picture For Game NEW YORK, NOV. IIs-OnleSS L. s. U. can and does put on a show against Tulane at Baton Rouge tomorrow, the great prob ability Is that it will be Washing ton, Of the Northwest, versus Ala bama, of the deep South, for the Rose Bowl game at Pasadena on January /. This much was indi- Gated, if not actually ordained dur ing yesterdays holiday develop ments when Washington earned the West Coast bid with it’s 40 to 0 victory over Washington State, while Alabama finished its regular season unbeaten with IA to 6 decision over Vanderbilt. There are, unfortunately, several kinds of finishes-and Fordham’s was q well-merited z to 6 defeat by New York University. This is, of course, the same Fordham team that always starts for the Rose Bowl in the middle Of November and winds up having its New Year dinner at a nearby dairy lunch. It hit its peak against Purdue, then faded into a tie with Georgia and finally lost yesterday for the first time, the winner being team that once held Ohio State Splendidly, the score being only so to 0. Even a New York sports writer can’t make anything, but hashedbrown potatoes out of that. N. Y. u. I suspect, could have won yes terday by more than it did. FOrdham Worn Down Fordham, worn down to nothing through winning its games by max ing the other. team lose, gave its paSsers no protection and, on de- Tense, had it’s tackles mouse-trapped all day on the old Yale cut back play. It even broke a lad named Druze down field for what would have been winning touch down pass, but the young man began stepping up and down and never got his hands on ball that any able Scrub-Woman would have caught on the end of her mop. It was all for the best, of course. Fordham went as far as it could with what it had-and it’s just as well for Eastern prestige that this didn’t carry it any further than the dressing room at the Yankee Stadium. Alabama, at that, was behind at the half by 6 to. 0 and seems to be doing little fading on it’s own. For further indications along this line, see the Georgia Tech score of the week before. However, nobody argues with an mbeaten record in a season as boiSterouS as this. Alabama has one tie-With Tennessee in the light of later developments this looks better than LSU’s tie with Texas, although the latter came back to score one of yesterdays upsets with it’s to 0 game against Texas A. and M. Anyhow, LSU most assuredly remains in the running for ma t1onal as well as Rose Bowl recogmilton and, if it takes Tulane tomorrow with proper emphasis, it might even get both. Pitt Shows Power Pitt, a one-defeat team, again rolled out all of it’s tremendous power with 31-to-14 victory over Carnegie Tech; and Pennsylvania, having lost only to Yale, wound up its greatest season of a decade in beating Cornell IA to 6. It is interesting, though perhaps relalively unimportant, that two Of the ranking one-defeat teams are Pitt and Marquette, 10th beaten by DuqueSne. Duke, figuring in the same class, went Scoreless into the final period and then beat North Carolina State Is to 0. Duke, they tell me, should never have lost to Tennessee, but the point is that it did. And if you are looking around for one-defeat teams, why go further than Minnesota i.gainst North western-unleSs you care to go as far as Northwestern against Notre Dame. It is, in fact, strictly comical football season, which is why the Rose Bowl should be glad to have Alabama, never beaten there, or L. S. u, which has never been invited. Moreover, it can really congratulate itself on Washington. Beaten by Minnesota and tied by Stanford, the huskies showed yesterday that they are just COM ing. on to their best at a time when they’ll be able to use it. lin -
