SANTA CLARA ELEVEN WHIPS STANFORD 1910 STANFORD UNIVERSITY, Cal, Sept. 27 U.P)-University of Santa Clara administered the first blow of what looks like a bad season for Stanford university today by beating the Pacific coast and Rose Bowl champions 1870 in a loose game played in weather that was tco hot for football 1t was a great beginning for the coaching career of Lawrence (Buck) Shaw, new Santa Clara football mentor, and an eqally disappointing start for Coach Claude Thorn hills hopes of reaching footballs heights for the fourth straight year. The Santa Clara team was quick to capitalize on the few breaks the game produced. Santa Clara scored in the second and the fourth periods and added an extra point on the secono score. After both teams had struggled around in midfield through the first quarter and part of the second Santa Clara got a break when their defense rushed Glenn Hamilton, Stanford punter, and the ball rolled cut of bounds on Stanford’s 25. Don Derosa, veteran Mission school back smashed at the line for a 1-yard gain and then cut over tackle on a reverse to run to Stanford’s 13 yard line He fumbled as he was tackled, but the officials let Santa Clara keep the ball. Suddenly young Manuel Gomez broke into the clear, Falaschi raised his arm, and the ball swooped to the waiting Gomez, who had only 5 yards to go to a touchdown. Falaschi’s placekick was wide. The second score was more spec tacular. Stanford, trying hard to get that Go lead back, tried the dangerous expedient of passing in its own territory. Gilbert, a Santa Clara sub, snatched the toss and ran it back to Stanfords 80. AS horde of cardinal jerseys bore down on him, Gilbert tossed a lat eral pass to Barlow, and the Santa Clara back dashed to the 8-yeard line before he was chased out of bounds. Quarterback Perrin sent Fullback Gunther crashing into the tackle hole. But Perrin and not Gunther had the ball The quarterback galloped wide and deep toward the side line, turned toward the goal line and crossee the last mark before Stanford’s badly fooled defense caught up with him. Gilbert place kicked the extra point that ended the scoring.
